That's exactly right, and I wasn't thrilled about trotting out the freshman pitcher and then leaving him in when he struggled from the start.

This is why I was eviscerating DVH for Gibler. Not a terrible call out of the pen (he obviously wasn't the one committing the errors) but after the walk it was obvious he was having trouble finding the zone.

I would've preferred a more experienced guy like Carter or someone like that to have been brought in there to settle things down.

As we see every year, getting the final out in Omaha is the hardest out to get.

The answer is never with DVH.

In terms of draft rankings and talent composite, this is the most talented team DVH has brought to Omaha and they went 2-2.

DVH has now been to Omaha 10x and has only even made the finals once. He's on par with Mike Martin, who went 17x but only made the finals twice.

Think about this. DVH has almost as many Omaha appearances (10) by himself as Pat Casey and Tim Corbin combined (11), yet those two guys have 5 rings between them and 2 other appearances in the championship series.

At a certain point we can confidently say that something about DVH's approach in Omaha is not working.

As Kyle Peterson said on the broadcast when looking at the slow-mo replay, his body language made it appear like never gave a single thought of going to second.

Even with two outs, you'd think the more natural play would be to 2nd, as that's where he's going almost every time in this sitch.

Minus mac, pitching was more than enough.

Our pitchers should be celebrated far and wide.  Other than Mac's struggles to close out a game, and Root having "that" inning, they showed up bigly as a unit.  A big unit.

Hitting, once again, doomed us to a game that was close enough at the end to be Arkansas'd.

Or Coil?  So Coil sits his ass on the bench and never throws one pitch during the CWS...not even one fucking pitch while having a 1.27 ERA in 14 appearances over 21 innings, 2 walks.   So you don't bring in the guy that isn't likely to give a free base...

No, you're being too Goddamn retarded to look at anything other than the beautiful bronzed bogeyman at shortstop.  For that matter, to look at the entire CWS.  We were in two elimination games because hitting did nothing but leave runners in scoring position in the first fucking game while our pitchers did everything they could to keep it close.

I turned it off and never watched any replays. I had no idea he was one step out of the batters box at that point in the play.

I didn't see the same struggle by Gibler.

He struck out Pearson.

He got Curiel to 2-2 before the grounder that Robinett brain farted on.

He walked Frey, but you have to be careful with him in that situation.

He threw a first pitch strike to Milam, then the grounder to Aloy that should've ended the game.


You can say we should have gone to a righty to face Frey, ok maybe. But Gibler had been working low, which is ideal to keep the ball in the park there.

Or we could have brought in either Coil or Jimenez to face Milam. As the announcers pointed out, Milam was more dangerous from the left side of the plate, so you would go to Coil and maybe that was the thing to do. But again, Gibler induced a tailor-made double play ball.

So yeah, maybe after that trauma, you go to someone else just to slow things down or give them a look they hadn't seen. I can't really argue that one.


My overall point being, something bad was eventually going to happen primarily because that's our fate. I don't totally buy that we shrink from the moment. If we did, we would've simply tucked tail at 2-1 and curled up in the corner against Shores (as several in this very thread seemed to do).
