In my opinion the PTB wanted more control of football and probably the other two big sports and didn't not want another AD like Long. They wanted to be Jerry Jones and run things out right. Hunter is just an errand boy for them.

Quote from: jdcatty on Sep 15, 2025, 05:41 PMHonest question-- in this day of the transfer portal, will a "grade A asshole" really work?  Yes, I know you will just say "if you pay them enough", but I really wonder if that is true. Kids have so many options as to where they can go, and lotsa schools will pay as much as we can.

You're essentially changing out rosters every year anyway.   So it probably would work...especially on offense.

If that result got us Cal, then maybe there's hope for him after all.

Fair point

I don't know that there really is a archetype coach you can just spin up and say ok go get it now days. What worked in the past doesn't necessarily mean shit now. I guess maybe I'd still prefer to take my chances with a highly focused Type A personality.

Here's some paradox shit for you:

does anyone really think Ryan Day is as great as his record says he is? I don't...he may be really decent to good but I'm not convinced he's great. I think Ohio State's success mostly comes from an institution of pissing excellence for decades and probably sits in a hot bed of recruiting. They likely have a lot of really quality administrative people in the building that know how to make shit happen. Also they play in a much softer pasty white Big 10 and are fresh as a daisy come playoffs and really should give programs a run for their money.

There's an obvious counterargument to this being Alabama in the wake of Nick Saban's exit. It's been less than optimal. So the notion that you can just plug in a new chicken into a highly squared away football factory doesn't always render the results you would think. Coaches still matter and right now as it sits there's still plenty of hard ass types still out there having success.
"I got fired for using free speech" yea imagine getting killed over it

vegashog

saban was the definition of a grade asshole and nil plus the portal kicked his ass. and it wasn't like he didn't have money to pay the players.

He admitted that Tyson told him to ask Cal if he would want to the job.

See, that's where I differ with you.  Yes, we change out rosters every year, but the Ohio States, Texas, ND , etc don't have nearly as much turnover as we do.  I think the ones we will see go far in the playoffs are the schools we will see hold on to bigger percentages of their rosters every year.

Even Petrino needs a couple of years with them

Those schools still have more/better depth. They are able keep more kids to develop than schools like Arkansas. Kid doesn't play here, he's gone.

That's what I think. Not having to recruit would help with one of Petrino weaknesses. The ability to put players in the pros will continue to be a big part of where kids go. Surely they'll fix the transfer portal eventually to stop the hurt feelings transfers.

You get what you pay for.

Lane Kiffin > Sam Pittman
Ole Miss coaches salaries > Arkansas coaches salaries
Ole Miss NIL > Arkansas NIL

Ole Miss > Arkansas

Wash, rinse, and repeat with a lot of our conference foes.
I'm sorry Elvis......for all of it.

If he wants to be the puppet over the big 3 sports, and let the big money guys pull the coaches for those, I'm not opposed. Assuming they can pull off the Cal or better types. Give them their say, accept their money and support, and he can run the rest of the sports. Maybe seek some input on the women's basketball too while we're at it.

That's kind of my thought.  These kids are now professionals.  They'll go where they are paid, play a year or two, and graduate or leave.

Let BP coach and game plan like only he can.  Let the general manager take care of personnel.

I think maybe we have to come full circle and hire BMFP as head coach to break the curse.

The new chicken has to have the connections to put together the right staff.

It could be that Sam's connections were all mostly his age or older so most are retired.  Never having been an HC he doesn't know as many keed coaches.  A lot of rising assistants are 30 years younger than he is.
