He has to have and keep possession of it if he catches it while going to the ground. The ball came out as he hit the ground so it's incomplete. Basically, he needs to get up with it. It can't come out when he hits the ground or it's incomplete.

Looked like he went to the ground with it and had it...hitting the ground didn't cause the ball to come out. 

My beef is with the rule rather than the call.
