Quote from: Barton Fink on Dec 01, 2025, 03:19 PMPlain and simple, there were no home run hires out there outside of Kiffen.

Kelly was a home run hire for LSU, too. Ditto for Jimbo at A&M and Herman at Texas.

There's no such thing as a home run hire. The only sure fire home run hires the last 20 years that worked out were Saban at Bama and Meyer at OSU. The rest, like almost all hires, were crapshoots.

Just look at the teams in the playoff last year and where their coaches came from.

Oregon - DC
Georgia - DC
Boise - DC
AZ State - OC
Texas - OC (but previous HC experience)
Penn State - HC
Notre Dame - DC
Ohio State - OC
Tennessee - HC (3 years in AAC)
IU - HC
SMU - OC
Clemson - ST

8 of the 12 teams were lead by head coaches hired from the coordinator ranks with zero previous HC experience.

Who was the last coach a fanbase hated when he was announced who ended up winning big? Orgeron maybe? Before that Chizik was HATED at Auburn.

Both won a natty before they returned to form and were fired.

I'll take that. We tend to blow up the program when the coach has only won a liberty bowl.

Kiffen and his last few seasons, plus being 11-1 this year, is as close of a home run hire as you're gonna get. Maybe a stand up triple?

He was the best hire of the season, but he was a guy who never won anything of substance as a HC at multiple schools.

I'll give ya that. And he lost at USC. Nothing is a given for sure.

Smith from Bryant and Hodges from Marked Tree are football players. There were a lot of athletes on the field for Rogers and Bryant. Those two stood out as playas.

It stands to reason that Silverfield probably knows our in-state talent way better than any of the other candidates we've talked about. We all know we aren't winning depending on in-state guys but we damn sure aren't winning with out of state players that are only there for a paycheck. Somehow some way we've got to strike that balance. Don't low ball our in-state keeds. There's nothing worse than seeing in-state kids go to other P5 situations and not only play but a good many thru the years have had significant roles.

Also I'm going to hazard he knows the Memphis and Miss areas fairly well and may have built up some connections there....so we'll see how this goes. I know over the past several years leading back to the Cornrows days and perhaps earlier Memphis was finding guys that could have played in the SEC. Some probably didn't have the grades. I'm not sure that even matters now when is the last time you've heard about a player being on academic suspension or flat out flunked out of school or couldn't make it in and had to go JUCO?

He definitly has good relationships around Memphis.  I'm friends with the Collierville HC and they have had several kids go to UM under Silverfield.  I wouldn't mind to get their RB and a WR that will be a 2027 recruit.

I think any Arkansas kid that is good enough, needs ro be gotten by us.  I think we need to reach a bit from time to time to build connections and goodwill.  I think that is easier to do nowadays since it is easier to process a marginal player who didn't pan out with an easy transfer to somewhere he can play and replace him with another transfer.  So, basically we need to be greedy with every player in the state and make this place off limits and a waste of time for other comparable programs.  Mizzou and Okie State should not be getting two or three players a year from here.

vegashog

losing good instate kids to missouri has gotten really fucking old.

The Whyte Boar

I guarantee you it's a matter of mere weeks until Drinkwitz starts throwing some thinly veiled barbs Silverfield's way.

Was just talking to a buddy of mine and one thing he mentioned (UT fan) is that Silverfield seems like a good fit as far as being a guy with regional ties.  He has relationships with TN, MS and AR high schools and smaller colleges.  RS also has experience with the portal and done pretty well.  Feral needs to start a "brightsiders" thread.

I'm on board until he gives me a reason not to be.

At the risk of being an idiot due to my name, it's all about Show Me.  Many commented on his meeting clips and how we need action not talk.  That's absolutely right.

Flipping 3 Arkansas kids to Fayetteville is a good start with action, so that's an initial bright side observation.

The best high school football player in Memphis is currently committed to Austin Peay State.

He's the best player I saw in person this year, and I saw some powerhouse teams from Tenn, Miss, and Alabama.

His name is Kelvin Perkins. He plays at Southwind High School. Hope Silverfield gives him a look.

I don't understand his offer list. At all.

He's a stud, just don't know if he has the size to play QB at an SEC level. Mostly smaller schools (a lot of them) have offered, including Memphis so Silverfield knows about him. He might be worth a look at WR/Ath if not QB

I agree. Even if it's not at QB, he's faster than 99% of the current roster. He's a winner, too, apparently.
