Correct; one phase of an infection caused by Yersinia pestis, as is the bubo phase and the septicemia phase.

Different names for the same infection. Same plague, different phases.

No, not different phases.  Different diseases caused by the same agent.  Bubonic plague DID NOT usually progress to Pneumonic plague and vice versa.

They are not different names for the same infection.  They are descriptions of different conditions caused by the same infection.

Though I would add that is probably more likely to progress to pneumonic plague today than in medieval times because back then the sufferers usually died before it got that far.  Nowadays someone is much more likely to linger and have it spread through there bloodstream to the lungs.

Seems fitting to have a plague discussion in the Razorback football thread on the eve of the season kickoff where we enter the season with the second longest current losing streak (thank you Okie St) in the country.

Also if I recall correctly isn't FNG a doc?

TWB truly knows everything. A lawyer lecturing a doctor on the fine points of diseases.

Sigh...you are predictable, I'll give you that.

An infectious disease is caused by the entrance into the body of pathogenic agents or microorganisms--in this particular case Yersinia pestis. One agent (Yersinia pestis); one disease (plague). The most common manifestation (up to 90%) is termed bubonic, based on the physical presence of swollen lymph nodes (buboes). Septicemia (bloodstream; <15%) and pneumonic (lungs; <5%) manifestations can also occur either separately or in concert.

Now, let's revisit the original dispute. You posted "Bubonic plague isn't actually contagious." as a declarative statement. I replied "Human-to-human spread of Yersinia pestis is rare but can occur once the infection reaches the pneumonic phase.", which is also a declarative statement.

A patient infected by Y.pestis that displays physical signs of lymphadenopathy (so-called Bubonic plague) can also carry infection within the bloodstream and/or lungs--although this is rare. Ergo, in layman's terms, "Bubonic plague" can be actually contagious.

And no.  That is simply not correct.

If you want to be accurate, say "plague is sometimes contagious when it occurs in the pneumonic form".

But bubonic plague is not normally contagious unless the buboes burst.

The disease is Plague.  Plague is caused by Y. Pestis.  Bubonic plague is when it infects the buboes.  Pneumonic plague is when it infects the lungs.

We're not talking laymen's terms.  You played "well actually" and I "well actually" back at you.

This isn't a courtroom, counselor, and there is no jury you need to sway.

Your statement "Bubonic plague isn't actually contagious" was factually incorrect. Just admit that, every once in a blue moon, even you fall victim to human fallibility and move on.

And I didn't add "...if you then choose to directly expose yourself to the fluid."  It's a bacterial infection.  It's like you might get staph if you rub up on an open wound.

It isn't.

Just to clear, you've gone from arguing Bubonic Plague is actually Pneumonic Plague and therefore, contagious to arguing semantics with me that a bacteria can transmit from one host to another through direct contact.
