Over the span of the last 3 seasons we are seeing completely different players doing mostly the same kinds of mistakes and inabilities to "measure up". Sometimes the pattern of a coach is just the pattern and we get to a point where you really shouldn't expect much different. Is he capable of getting this program back to 9 wins? Is that really the goal? What are we doing here because it feels like the goal is to hold serve on being happy to get that toilet bowl swag in what will forever amount to an extra spring game from now on. We've entered an era of college football where 12 teams get to enter the cage we call playoffs and we're not even trying to get there.


The next few games are obviously important for a few reasons. 

1. We (ok the hog top brass) are looking for reasons to keep this coach and/or his staff. That is going to require flashes and glimmers if not outright improvement akin to what we all remember from Petrino's first year team that fought like hell and won 5 games. This current team is far more talented than that bunch but far less disciplined. I think most fans believe the magic number is six wins and he gets to keep his job. Anything below that should be grounds for termination for cause. Cause you suck.

2. Like last season it's hard to grade shit when the offensive line can't get out of it's own way. Unlike last season I think the game film is revealing some things where a more advanced QB could have and would have made plays where our guy just isn't there yet and may never be that guy. A better QB sees some things presnap and anticipates where the pressure will come from. We're not asking this kid to be Aaron Rodgers and I do understand he's going to be a big raw in this offense. But still yet I think after 5 or 6 games it's time to show that you can make some corrections to your game. A lot of that stuff is fairly correctable. It's not so much the mechanics it's the eye discipline. It's mostly the mental side of things it's got to come much faster. If he can't do it then you have to see what you have with someone else under fire.

3. Right now I don't see enough to make me feel like we carry forward with this QB into next season or at least not without bringing in serious competition. If it's not going to come from Singleton or Jackson then we'll have to get another portal guy to compete for the starter gig. I've seen plenty out of Green to make me have to question the readiness of our two backups capability. Again...patterns are patterns regardless of the OC we don't ever have a #2 "ready".

4. To summarize we've got the same issues...special teams gaffs, guys can't hold onto the ball, we're throwing interceptions, defense pisses down it's leg at the worst possible moment. Defensive line looks like Tarzan's and play like Jane. Linebackers disappear when you need them the most. WRs don't get open and if they do the QB bailed out of that shit because he doesn't want to get murder/death/killed in the pocket. RBs have no running lanes. Devin Bale playing hero ball. I mean this shit has to stop.

That really disappointed me when that happened.  I still struggle to reconcile that internally.  On the one hand I get it... He's gotta look out for himself and his.  Business wise, probably the right move.  But he strikes as a "good dude", and the good dude he seems to be would have kept the first lady.  I can't fault him for moving to Sexton... but I feel like I'd like him more (as a dude) if he kept her.  I mean, I still "like" him... He just isn't the coach to get it done.  I feel like my respect for him would return if he would just resign and say he's a man of his word.  If that makes sense.

Certainly the lure of the almighty dollar threw all that integrity out the window. 

He should've hung it up, based on his hiring day comments.

Odom would have a better chance at the playoff at UNLV as would Lashlee at SMU.

Now that blowU and teasip are in the league we just went down 2 rungs.

Hire the guy at Indiana, the dude wins but we'll chase Gus around the room for 2-3 weeks then hire Gary Patterson or Phil Fulmer or some other name coach whose energy and better days are behind them.

Or worse, Jerry writes a check dependent on taking Mike McCarthy off his hands.

I'm looking at this from a thing where we need to find head coaches that have ambitions beyond party barges and golf courses. We need a coach that's young enough to be driven to succeed and scared enough of having their career ended by taking this job. So if they do take the money they come in and work their asses off and not just take the pay until they are paid to leave. Now obviously that being said my first call would be to Tyson chicken and the 2nd would be to Nick Saban because there are always exceptions to the rule. If you can somehow get Saban around 12 per for a 5 year note then god damn it lets do this shit.

Joey McGuire (Texas Tech) like his projection into becoming a good to great head coach
Barry Odom (UNLV) He's going to get a another shot at a P5 high pay job if the season holds out for them.
Jake Dickert (Wash St) having a good season could potentially parlay into a legit P5 spot.
Dan Lanning (Oregon) Heavy ties to the KC area other programs have plucked Oregon coaches so it can be done.
Barry Lunney Jr. (Illinois OC) You've heard of Great Value Nutt...I give you Clover Valley Hatfield
Kirby Moore (Missouri OC) brother of Kellen Moore, looks to be on a fast track to a hc gig
Eric Morris (North Texas) another Texas Tech guy, WR under Leach, career on the upswing well maybe. I wouldn't dismiss this considering he was around programs that had success with limited talent on hand.

Lanning wasn't even interested in Alabama.  There is a greater chance of Sam getting paid to be a swimsuit model than there is of hiring Lanning.

No to anyone named Morris.  It will always be too soon. 

Moore at Missouri has a terrible offense in spite of a lot of talent.  Pass. 

Lunney is out simply because we need to get off the "Arkansas ties" train.  Never hire someone you can't fire if needed. 

Off the realistic candidates on your list I like Dickert or McGuire best.  Expect Odom will be the hire...IF we have an opening which I don't see happening unless we fall to 4-8 or worse, or lose the next four to get to 3-6.

This is my first choice.  He has climbed the ladder and won at every stop.  Worked under Chuck Amato from 2000-2006 as QB/TE/Recruiting Coord.  Was an asst at Bama under Saban as WR/RC from 2007-2010.  I like the recruiting background and he should have good connections to hire quality assistants.

They "should" be 9-0 going into the game with Michigan, then they get Ohio St the following game.

$6M buyout shouldn't scare us and seems manageable.  Any decent coach we go after is going to have some buyout.

But, 64 years old. He may take the job as another retirement payout like we have had. I like him, but surely at his age, he would not want to deal with NIL and the portal much longer.

He blames players and alludes to blaming assistants.  He makes excuses.  He's responsible for what happens or fails to happen.  More importantly, he's responsible for fixing it.  Same shit over and over.

I listen to most of his pressers.  I've never heard him throw a player or an assistant under the bus.  I've heard him say many times he isn't getting it done.  

I'll make sure to pay better attention going forward.  If he has done those things then he deserves the ire of the fans.
