"Who's going to play" is certainly "pertaining to the bowl game".

It would seem to preclude questions like "how's the hip" and "isn't it sad about Bob Holt".

"Playing" can be interpreted a  lot of different ways. Just because we put a team on the field doesn't mean they are actually playing football.
