If Arkansas had the biggest NIL budget in all the land, Sam would be undefeated and everyone would be sucking his dick at Oklawn.

Sam is a small part of a very much bigger problem. The only thing you and I most likely agree on is it is long overdue for a head coaching change.

Tex's posts about Pittman remind me of this old joke. He might as well give us NUMBER FOUR! and save all the typing.

A man is sent to prison for the first time. At night, the lights in the cell block are turned off, and his cellmate goes over to the bars and yells, "Number twelve!" Agree that Sam may not be a great or even good coach, but disagree that he'd really shine if he had the biggest NIL budget. He'd still be doing stupid shit with better players. He's in over his head and we're hoping that the OC and DC can negate Sam's leadership.

There are a good many coaches that tend to turn into geniuses when you give them great talent to work with. Dabo Sweeney is among them. Pittman will never have that at Arkansas and likely never will the remainder of his days as a head coach.

In terms of leadership yes he's made blunders that inexperienced head coaches make both in terms of who he's surrounded himself with and most importantly his in-game decision making.

I think it was Adam Ford who predicted that the Chavis defense would be a massive failure and that over the last 25 to 30 ish years we've found our best defenses from running something akin to a 4-2-5 (bandit/rover) Code Red type bullshit defense with home-grown boys on D. When Pittman took the job I think our defense was accidentally good under Odom for that first season after they figured out how to lay back and play zone. That alignment was not something Odom cared for but it's what we went to. That was coaching either by Odom or Pittman...somebody made that decision to go to that scheme which kept us in games. The only thing we know for sure is after Odom was gone Pittman's in-game decision making got a lot worse. It got better last season with Petrino on the sidelines letting him know what a dumbass he is.

Under this new DC we've been Okay at times and meh at others. I think we're poised for one of those pleasantly not terrible kind of defenses this season. I also think our schedule is super tough and that might be the biggest factor. Much depends on surviving the first month of season to keep the buy-in happening.
