Toby fucking Bailey. We beat Rasheed and Stackhouse in the Final Four, but even w/ Edney out we couldn't handle UCLA and that damn freshman. I don't think he ever accomplished much after that besides hanging out w/ Snoop Dogg.

In sure some will argue with me and I'm old and probably have it wrong, but my memory says Nolan was out coached. They put their big man on Corliss instead of Stewart and it threw everything off.

Just like the UCon/Baylor Women's championship game, I'll go to my grave believing the refs either had money on the game or it was just racism.

The way the allowed UCon to hack and foul Griner in that final is probably the only game like that I have seen such an obvious bias other than the way they allowed Zidek to manhandle Corliss all night.

It was either a financial bias or racial because they clearly did not call it as they saw it.  It was that blatant.

Since we are reminiscing about long forgotten, weirdo players in basketball history. What about Chris Jefferies in 98? I thought that guy was amazing and then he left for Fresno State. Who could also forget the white boy experiment/connection with Jason William and that Hankins kid. What a weird fucking year

Bringing in Williams and Hankins was just a big fuck you by Nolan to people like Wally Hall who constantly bitched and moaned about Nolan not recruiting in state (white) kids. That was also the beginning of the end for Nolan at Arkansas.

Nolan just isn't very smart. He quit after winning the championship and fell back on racism when he got called on his poor results.

If you went to games during that time period you would have noticed how weird it was that the crowd would erupt when the great white hope from Hairless Dick, Arkansas, Jason Jennings would enter the game. It's the same way with Pinion, so much of the fanbase begs for him to get minutes even though he fucking sucks. Nolan might have exaggerated the racial element but it definitely exists.

This was on the heels of the game literally changing rules because of his and Tark's style of play being so successful. They took down Tark and either believed Nolan to be dirty or were using it as a reason to get Nolan and his black boys street ball. I don't know it could go either way really. It's not a huge stretch to see that the NCAA was corrupt as fuck and there were plenty of people from both inside and outside of the sport that were happy to see Nolan take a hit professionally.

Arising out of that perhaps for him was some attempt to play a bit more straight laced by recruiting more "basketball players" e.g. white guys. Nobody said shit about Warren Linn or Pat Bradley. Some of those guys played some pretty big minutes and then all the sudden it was that Nolan doesn't recruit in-state kids (white guys). It was a stupid take then and now. The simple case is Nolan missed on some dudes and that shit happens. Jason Gilbert was a damn good 3 point shooter but wasn't a SEC talent. Justin Hankins was a heck of a AGFC officer but not a SEC player. Jason Jennings made a good UPS driver from what I hear. My memory isn't what it used to be but I recall at least for a couple of those guys they were regarded as decent talents...maybe 3 star guys. We've done worse at the time. Some would say Nolan intentionally missed...others would point to his last class was going to have Andre Igadala and some other studs and that all fell apart when Nolan was fired.



It's important to note that something around that time changed in terms of academics and that hurt our recruiting in the Memphis/Mississippi Delta area for sure. I think it was prop 48 went away and that was a tool that Nolan loved to use. We weren't able to take nearly as many grade risks. They basically fucked Nolan on how he wanted to play defense and how he wanted to recruit players to the program all of which was working fairly well for both our program and the kids. They also fucked the program with that "lack of Institutional control" bullshit. In the years since then I highly doubt we've seen some kind of massive uptick in graduations despite having to adhere to APR and all that stuff.

Also by the late 90s and very early into the 2000s AAU ball had taken hold and if you didn't suck the right dicks you didn't get the talent. Nolan wasn't much on sucking dicks.

If you look at the demographics of where Nolan liked to land players out of today and I think you'll find many depleted dilapidated towns and cities. Nobody can live off talent from Pine Bluff that's for sure. I imagine the same is probably true for a lot of those places around the Dallas area he liked to recruit from.

We were doing some shady shit.  Frank hired the law firm of former NCAA investigators who effectively buried it. 

I don't think Nolan was directly responsible for it, but he was wrong to accuse Frank of making it worse with the NCAA when he did exactly the opposite.
