Quote from: HOGSRUNWILD on Dec 16, 2024, 01:55 AMIronically, the structure of Southlake makes this very difficult as there are no apartments, just single family homes and a few townhomes by city code.  Median listing price is around $1.7M so it is hard to 'stash' a kid in the district so they can play sports as far as I understand it.

The real secret is just a bunch of rich kids, mostly white, that get a fuckload of extra instruction/training to get every single drop of performance out of their limited physical potential.  Also, the "system" helps where from the earliest age, every single football team runs the same system so by the time they get to HS, the entire system is second nature to them with very little to learn.  Same with cheerleading.  You have little girls doing the same routines as the senior high girls the entire way up so it is all just second nature by the time they get there.  The problem is when they run into other well coached teams with more physical potential (like DeSoto normally).  Right now, we actually have two D1 commit RB's.  I think USC and somewhere else decent, both hurt, so our main running back is a converted receiver.  We might actually have a chance if those dudes were healthy and the current RB could play receiver.  Alas, they aren't and we will likely get boatraced in the finals like usual.  Still a great year all things considered.

Baseball is also another where all that extra outside school parent-paid training comes in handy.

Basketball...just can't overcome the physical limitations if you know what I mean.

My plan for my son is an alternate sport since, let's be honest, being a half-Japanese kid without a great athlete parents, he isn't likely to make varsity unless it is kicker or something.  Maybe baseball.

This is my plan:  https://www.carrollbassteam.com/  either that or golf...but I prefer the idea of bass fishing since it would be a good excuse to get the best boat I can afford "For the boy's future" and potential scholarships.

Being half-Japanese I'd also rule him out of any Squid Games.

Now you're thinking.

The travel baseball thing is just insanity to me. I know people who are gone every fucking weekend with that stuff.

Quote from: dhog on Dec 15, 2024, 10:34 AMElkins finished 7-1 against the top 20 of their classification, including beating #3,4,5. Obviously ran into a better team, with some key injuries yesterday. Still a helluva season for a small town school.

Yeah the Elkins QB had a concussion and was clearly still suffering from lingering effects of that. Plus the conditions and Arky had a great game plan.

I'd like to see a rematch where he isn't concussed and it's 60 degrees with clear skies. But it is what it is. Arky was a deserving champion.

Yeah, my grandson is 17 has a couple friends that play travel baseball and they are gone most weekends and all Summer. Thousands of dollars in travel expense. He also has a girlfriend that does travel softball. She's gone every weekend and was in Oklahoma all weekend last week. Baseball/Softball have definitely become a year round expensive sports.

Yeah, Ben should not have been on the field. I felt for him, was told he was very distraught after the game. 15 games is a lot of games for 4A/3A sized schools. Talent, good coaching is key but luck and staying healthy is huge. Elkins had a starting OL and starting DB out with ACLs since PG game and had a couple beat up from last week, including the QB. Arky definitely had the edge in talent. QB is just a sophomore (week before Mills QB was a freshman).
Arky was a class act too. Kids and coaches very respectful before and after the game.

They spend a ton on it for sure. Both time and money.  But it becomes their social group as well, both for the kids and the parents.

I was kind of sad that my kid wasn't a good enough player for that when he was that age, but looking back now I'm happy he wasn't that focused on it.

I'm against specialization.

In theory I am as well.

But I watch my nephews who are good players and have a blast doing it and see the benefit.  The older one (currently 13) has the ability to play somewhere after high school if he keeps developing.  You can't teach 95th percentile velocity and left-handedness.  I just hope they don't get too burned out on it.

My 8 year old is on a travel baseball team, but they only play local in central AR area and don't travel out of state. I'll never go that route.

If it comes to that for the travel team he's on as he gets older we'll go back to his local league at Jr. Deputy here in LR.

I had a buddy whose kid was on one, burned him out by high school.

The greatest South Park episode ever is based on it.

Buy new.  That way you can finance at an affordable $500 a month for the next 25 years.

it is crazy the number of tournaments but then it is quite teh side hustle for umpires.

Back to the Elkins game, their punter got injured and they kicked a field goal instead. The announcers called it a free kick, like it was something you could declare. I didn't hear the full explanation.

In high school a FG that goes out of bounds in the field is the same as a punt. Returning team's ball where it goes out.
If it goes into end zone it is a dead ball and comes out to the 20.
They "attempted" a 70 yd FG.

Arky did that after the blocked punt. Never seen that before.

Nice thing about living in a big metro is that it's easy to keep it local.  My son plays AAU basketball and we never leave the metroplex, everything's within an hour or so.  Same with a lot of select baseball here (nobody uses the term "travel" because it isn't really required). He plays teams from Little Rock, New Orleans, etc but doesn't need to go anywhere.
