Agreed completely.

It's a culture problem - either lack of emphasis on fundamentals or lack of accountability for not displaying them

Quote from: Barton Fink on Dec 02, 2024, 12:27 PMI fail to realize how many times one must be told to secure the ball and how to secure the ball. It's a 10 minute discussion. Then you go through the drills every team does every week to practice it. If someone at practice fumbles, I promise you a coach jumps his ass about it.

Our OC is Petrino. He's responsible for the offense. Do you think he's like "Well kid you shouldn't have lost the ball, Can you please try a little harder next time?". Fuck no

I might have some unique insight into this type of situation.

I was an officer in the Navy.  You might ask yourself, how the fuck does that align with this?

Well, I'll tell you.  Both football players and your typical enlisted Navy dude are both borderline retarded, for the most part.  That doesn't mean they aren't good guys, but they typically aren't the smartest.  Do you know how you get them do be able to carry out quite detailed and intricate activities, in unison, as a team?  You drill the fuck out of them.  You drill it and then you drill it some more and then you keep drilling it and any mistake is met with repercussions, real repercussions, and then you drill it some more and so everyone suffers with Petty Officer Third Class fuckface keeps making the same mistake.  You demand perfection and hold your Chiefs responsible.  These Chiefs know their shit and are awesome.  They can mold these guys into a machine.  They were once also PO3 Fuckface and will slack off if they are allowed to. That is where you, as a JO, must hold them accountable.  Guess what, you, as a JO, were also a HS and College fuckface, so the XO has to hold you accountable.  The XO was also a JO fuckface so guess who demands excellence from the XO?  The Captain of the ship.  It ALL starts from the top and if the CO doesn't demand excellence, a slack attitude will trickle down all the way to PO3 Fuckface and they will skip an inspection or skip a step in a procedure and you end up with a mainspace fire or you run aground on a reef.

Well, I mean, you TOLD them to do it right and had a 10 minute conversation on it...  That doesn't work with people like that.  You have to drill it into them so there is no other way known to them.  There is only the right way and it is mental and muscle memory taking over, not thinking about doing it the right way.

A shit Captain will have a shit ship, regardless of how good everyone else, from the XO down to Seaman Schmuckatelli, were previously.

Sam Pittman isn't a good Captain and runs a lax ship.

I agree with all that.  I'll add that players/soldiers/sailors always end up despising the soft and lax leader while if not loving, having fond memories of the hard asses.  Team building can be as much about banding together against some hard assed coach or section chief as it is against other teams or enemies.

They won't admit it, but Sam is held in contempt by those players who have been there more than a year and I'll bet the atmosphere is awful.  Players coaches always end thusly.

Ball security is a like a lot of things...it should be as natural as breathing out on the field. I haven't played a down of football in damn near 30 years and still if someone hands me an item I'm taking that bitch like a football all proper like tucking in and securing. I played a lot of fullback and I-back in a triple option so a lot of that stuff just stays with you. I know about mesh points and all that shit.

I think I said this in another thread but fumbles are either from being less physical than the other guy...or a freak helmet on the ball or just flat out going brain dead or in some cases the QB/RB exchange or something to do with the center/QB exchange. That's about the gist of it. From what I've seen and this goes back further than Pittman probably as far back as Smile we tend to fumble balls out of laziness or being too aggressive fighting for extra yardage but still yet being stupid with the ball.

Coaches can't put their foot up a kids ass like they used to could so I think that's one reason we don't have this problem licked.

Interceptions when you are working in a passing offense with players that frankly aren't terribly bright is gonna happen. We knew there would be a learning curve. We knew this Green kid had a ton of potential but just wasn't getting it done consistently and that's why Boise State moved on. Well after 12 games or whatever I think we've seen the guy improve some but maybe not as much as we would like. We see the throws are there. A lot of those throws if he's making them we're not talking about him coming back at all...he'd be going to the NFL. That's the difference in the SEC from being a mediocre team and being a so so 8 or 9 win team. With 16 teams in the league now getting to 9 wins isn't anything to sneeze at either. We're legit talking about teams with 3 losses whining that they might not get into the playoffs.

If you don't want to watch the entire thing, at least get through about the first three minutes.

On that 4th and 7 early in the game, Petrino had designed a formation to essentially hide Hasz in the snow, outside the numbers. He was wide ass open, and it would've been an easy first down. Instead, Green threw the ball over the middle and Sategna got outmuscled for an incomplete pass.

Clearly  Petrino is "washed up."

I've believed for a while that Sam is a classic good performer as a front line supervisor, but sucks at management.

Do the offensive/defensive positions coaches usually report to the head coach or to the coordinators?  It seems to me that if Bobby controlled the O line and Running backs coaches, we could un-fuck some of this nonsense pretty damn ricky-tick.

Sam is essentially too lazy to demand attention detail needed.  When you hold someone accountable you have to be there to make sure they are accountable.  That requires effort and it is difficult to keep up with over time.  I don't see Sam doing that.

Bro, a good officer doesn't have to ORDER it.  You just make it known to the Chiefs what you expect/demand and they will make it happen if it is required.

Now, did one shitbag end up with some unexplained injuries after going AWOL for a day and talking shit to the PO1?  Maybe, maybe not.  Those are questions I had zero desire to ask.  Motherfuck fell into line after that

Aye aye, sir!  You're spot on. Guess who believed in the need for constant drills, preferably in August heat? JFB.

So what have we had since BMFP?  Bert was a lazyass who couldn't take the heat, so he gave his players especially his linemen, lots of days off.  Hence his teams were sloppy, out of shape, mistake prone.

Chad was fucking Captain Queeg. Couldn't commit. Blamed his players because he didn't spend time drilling but expected perfection in running his overly complicated playbook when they were never drilled on fundamentals of football, hence they couldn't tackle, couldn't kick, couldn't run basic plays because they couldn't block.

Then we get Sam, who takes the laziness of Bert and combines with a lack of accountability.  His teams are sloppy, stupid, lazy, inept regardless of the influence of bmfp and twill.  Sam's position defines the culture of the team; it is an exact reflection of him.  It will. Ever get better.

It's implied that the play was to the TE...at minimum your fricking QB should be scanning the field to notice stuff like nobody guarding the guy. The fact that Hasz wasn't all waiving his arms at the QB pre-snap kind of makes me think he knew the play was supposed to go to him but the QB never even looks at him.

Same thing in the game before where we do that short yardage play where the TE streaks down the field wide fucking open and the QB never looks for it. He's got to be the first Petrino QB I've ever seen that flat out missed that read and I've been watching Petrino QBs hit that fucking money play for damn near 20 years. It's there more often than not and how Petrino can call that shit and it be there that often is something to behold. When he was Missouri State he ran that play and everyone in the stadium but our fat lazy staff knew what was coming.

Easy to say that.  Tell me, please:

1. How many team meetings have you been to.
2. How many practices you have watched.
3. How you know what Sam does before and after practice.

I don't see Sam doing anything other than doing interviews, pressers, and waffling out onto the field and waiving. Ok once in a blue moon I see him telling someone to turn on that damn jukebox. I do see his teams he's responsible for rampant fumbling and interception kings, constant procedural penalties among other penalties and defenses that goat fuck with the best of them in the 4th quarter and have been seeing that for at least five years and possibly longer. Oh and a white boy playing corner that can't tackle or stay with anybody at the FBS level but sure knows where to line up.
