My good friend's niece was the camp counselor who busted the window of the cabin and got some of the kids out. Her 2 younger sisters were also there as campers and survived.

His neighbor's 8 y/o daughter was not as fortunate. It's hitting closer and closer to home as more info comes out.

There's so far 27 campers and counselors have died and it's truly heart breaking. And supposedly today they are due for more rain which won't help the issue and rescues

Truly heartbreaking. If you have ever driven out west, there are dry river beds with signs telling you flash floods may happen at any time. You wonder how, and the you see this. There are videos out there showing how they happen and it is really wild. It doesn't take much rain, but these folks had an enormous amount of rain in a short time. I really hope they find everyone. I feel for the families and can't imagine what the are going through.

There was some story about a coast guard guy being a rookie not very long on the job and saved 165 people in his "first action" over all this. Probably more than that by now.

Private, individual negligence resulted in the death of these campers. I would imagine 3 inches of rain up river would be concerning and dangerous. This was a simple math equation that people should have been awake to solve. Tragic and I can't even imagine what these parents are going through.

I'm sure a lot of you have driven up Big Thompson Canyon into Estes from Loveland.  It flooded in a similar fashion on the last weekend of July in 1976.  Killed 144 people. 

They had another one in 2013, and I went out shortly after and witnessed the carriage of that one.  Water is powerful and it comes at you real fast.

I've been on the Buffalo in the summer of 84 I think when it rose 15 or so feet in a matter of an hour or two, and it was one of the scariest things I've ever seen.  I was also in a canoe and had a life jacket.

I would also guess the roads out would be terrible to try to do an evacuation in a hurry.

During the dry season the Llano and Guadalupe Rivers are very low and slow moving. However, it doesn't take much rain, especially in a short amount of time, to cause issues. It was just way too much rain in too short of time, plus happening overnight.

Yeah, I have spent some time in those areas also.  Beautiful when the water is low.  It's crystal clear, etc. 

There just isn't any way to predict the kind of flash flooding they had-- water coming up 20-30 ft in ONE HOUR.  A real tragedy.

There were five people from the '76 flood they never found.

That one in 2013, we went out to Glenhaven, northeast of the park.  There were pickup trucks in trees down that canyon...lots of destruction.  The road was just gone in places.
