plenty of people had doubts about morris when he was hired, mainly about his terrible record (14-22) and terrible recruiting at smu.

i watched some of golesh's presser, he said the same shit.

Quote from: red death on Dec 05, 2025, 10:31 AMHis record at SMU when we hired him was 14-22. 2 losing seasons and a high water mark of 7-5.  Unbelievable now when you think about it.

Silverfield has never had a losing season, has beaten multiple P4 teams, and is 50-24, including 4-1 in bowl games.

I understand the trauma, but this hire is nothing, and I mean nothing, like the Chad hire, which is the worst hire of all time.

He was hired off "Clemson's/Dabo's offensive guru." Not his record at SMU.

Which is a metric that almost never, ever translates from coordinator to head coach.

Thanks.  I'm trying to find some optimism on this thing.  This helps.

It's all Deshawn Watsons fault.

And Jerry.  Don't forget Jerry, who wanted his grandson to be a QB on the team.

Getting back to the coordinators of the current coach...

These are underwhelming hires.

Memphis had a good offense. Who did you expect as DC?

I'll say some of the hyperbole he uses so far is not going to go over well.

He says best recruiting class EVER.

He says you'll be blown away by the staff.

Some of us remember when we weren't hot garbage at football, so these statements need to at least approximate reality or this will get old fast.

Lol.  We are an underwhelming program.

He was always going to bring his OC here.  That's no surprise. And that guy has gotten good results and knows exactly what Silverfield wants. That's a good thing, chemistry.

Roberts is a well known commodity.  Like Chavis.  I would have preferred someone younger myself, but everyone would have revolted.  Chavis was a good DC too, he remarked that he had never coached anywhere with as bad talent as he had while here.

Per the commercial appeal, Silverfield was the first coach HY talked to in October. I mean I'll settle for whatever since we will always be mediocre but GD why was this HY first call? I hope HY days are numbered he seems like a lazy fuck in the athletic department and I'm over him.

I agree somewhat.  But, it aligns with his overall mindset.

He shoots for perfection and I think we all know we're not going to sign the best class we've ever had.

It's a no win proposition.  If he says anything else he's going to get schlonged too.

I like that he's not scared.  Is it smart?  Probably not.  But I like it .

And to the recruiting class, it might end up being the best.  We've had 10 years worth of duds.  People look at stars, but that doesn't mean shit if you find ballers in the rough, they work their ass off, and they stick around.  He brought 2 kids over from Memphis and signed 4 here.  He knew all about those kids and he wanted them.

It's subjective.

In any case, I want HY gone. You can't tell me there's not someone out there that can make better strategic decisions regarding football and bettee fundraising and relationship building with donors. That's the entire job.

Pissing on our leg and telling us it's raining. Both of his first statements are less than what he enthusiastically proclaimed.

Not only that, but watching some of SMU's games you could see symptoms of a lot of the same shit that plagued him here later.  Indecision, getting beat by less talented teams, etc.

His high water mark of 7-5 included a win over Tulane where the officials absolutely hosed the Green Wave at the end.  I can't remember exactly what it was...something to do with the clock I think...but the game ended with Tulane on SMU's one yard line down 3.

they ruled that the tulane guy didn't score when the tv replay clearly showed he did.

the officials on the field refused to review it.

Thanks. I knew it was something...I remember watching the game and thinking Tulane got royally screwed.

Had that been called properly, in addition to never having a winning record at SMU Morris would have ended his career there on a four game losing streak.

He has been a failure at his job for a while.  Without Tyson, I wonder who he even hires for basketball.

I don't think I would have made as big a deal about Silverfield being the first guy I spoke to like HY did.  The perception is that HY is lazy or clueless.  The fact that it looks like the first guy he talked to had the job almost from the start pretty  jch reinforces that perception.

Pedo State just hired Campbell, so he was serious about leaving. So the reports of us talking to him were probably true.  One wonders how seriously HY pursued him.  HY has said he wouldn't have seriously talked to Calipari until Tyson told him that John was serious.  So, did he miss maybe getting on Campbell just because he assumed Campbell didn't want to move and was just trying for a raise?

No one really trusts HY.  Silverfield was pretty damned far down the list of fan choices and the initial reaction was almost universally negative.  Silverfield has done everything right so far and as our coach, I want him to do great.  But he was an initially unpopular hire made by an unpopular AD.  His leash will be short.  The schedule next year is brutal.  When we're 0-4 in conference the negativity will be off the charts and the cycle of despair will start again.

This is where my head is. Yurachek likely just assumed Campbell wouldn't leave and didn't pursue him strongly.

Yurachek seems like a guy who is terrified of being told 'no.'

Like a weak hitter in baseball who's afraid of swinging for the fences and bunts a lot to try to get on base, Yurachek seems to want to fish from a small pond and go after candidates we know will likely say yes.

Instead of going after guys like Campbell or another P4 coach, he prefers to play it safe.

If the Campbell deal happens, give the Penn State AD credit. He was a national laughingstock and meme'd to death after being turned down over and over, but yet he finally made solid contact and hit one into the gap by landing a very good coach.
