Assume Alabama was 4th prior to last weekends games, and FSU was 5th.

Anyone think that if Milroy had a season injury in the SEC championship, and FSU had the healthy starting QB, and had one loss, that FSU would have leapfrogged Alabama to get the 4th spot?

I don't.

Alabama's overcoming adversity of losing their starting QB, and win anyway, might even propel them to 2 or 3.

The whole "you are undefeated but you lost your QB" analysis is completely baffling to me.  That makes their continuing Ws MORE impressive.

This is a good point.  Something like "If you think FSU deserves the spot in the CFP over Alabama, you need to go and bet a bunch of money on FSU to beat Georgia.  Of course, you know you won't do it."

The narrative will be FSU was so heartbroken that they couldn't get up to play Georgia.

Also, where was all this outrage when Central Florida went undefeated a few years back?  If winning all your games is the argument decider then this Power 5 argument is stupid.  How many P5 teams lost to a non P5 school this year?

comparing FSU's season this year with Central Florida's year is kinda dumb. FSU beat a then highly ranked LSU and polished off the rest of their schedule to include their conference champ game. They overcame their QB having a season ending injury by winning the last few games without him. As has been pointed out there's no question if it was Alabama or Georgia in the same situation...we know how this would have turned out.

With that said I'm more surprised Georgia was left out but if the committee truly looks at this season alone certainly you can make the argument that Georgia played fairly lack luster for a good chunk of the season, had softer schedule than Bama and most importantly didn't take care of business. They were left out simply because Texas beat Alabama in the first game of the season when Bama couldn't block or do anything well.

Bama looked very beatable for much of the season...but won the games they should have won anyway. They played a far tougher schedule than FSU or Texas or Michigan played. That is the lone justification I would have between them at FSU.

The one thing that I see with all this especially if you are Arkansas is there isn't much of any incentive to be playing these tough non-conference games...like at all. I think we're supposed to play a P5 non-con every year now though but with the shrinking college landscape what is that going to mean in a couple years?

I'll expand on this...

Michigan's out of conference slate for 2023 was
East Carolina (2-10)
UNLV (9-4)
Bowling Green (7-5)

In fairness they play Texas next season so there's that. When they schedule the above teams they fully expected to be playing scrubs.

I'm probably going to bet FSU plus the points.

The team that feels like they got screwed usually plays with a chip on its shoulder in a bowl.  This feels kind of like Utah vs Alabama all over again.

That doesn't mean I think FSU is the better team...but they should be the more motivated group.

Why does Kiffen talk exactly like Nick Saban now?  It's like he's doing an impression.  Audition?

I would look at it this way, if the final four had been:

undefeated Michigan
undefeated Washington
undefeated Florida State
one loss Texass

would there be people (other than entitled Bama fans) saying "Alabama should have gotten in over undefeated Florida State!"

Maybe a few here and there, but I think the consensus would have been the top three was easy and the last spot was tough with three good 1-loss teams (Texas, Bama, Georgia) and only one spot left.

But now that FSU is out, people are retroactively talking about how it's justified in ways they never would have argued had they gotten in.

I reject SEC homerism. I hate Bama and their snobby fans. FSU is nothing to me, but a P5 team that continued to win after their first TWO QBs went down, and ended up winning every game they played is a team that has no business dropping multiple spots in the polls and being knocked out of the final four.

Bama had a better win than texas.

Georgia had a better loss than texas.

Fuck texas.

Winning games isn't all that matters then?  There is a subjective component to all this and some teams benefit and some teams don't.

For clarity, I don't disagree that UCF was an inferior team to the two in the NC game.  But, I also think FSU is the inferior team to the 4 that made it.

I don't know what any of that means other than to tell FSU tough shit.  They out...

I just think it sets a very bad precedent to say "we're leaving FSU out because they probably wouldn't be competitive versus Michigan"

Especially in College Football, which has enjoyed some of the biggest upsets in the sport's history during bowl games.

Seen this morning, "The NFL Playoff Committee has voted to eliminate Jacksonville from the playoffs, despite their record that would otherwise qualify them, because Trevor Lawrence is injured."

vegashog

they put a one loss tcu in last year that i'm sure not too many people thought would beat georgia.

and the "would you bet on" argument is bogus when it comes to the selection process. if that's an actual criteria then they need to blow the thing up and start over.

If both teams play their best, absolutely.

I think FSU will come out with a lot more fire and something to prove.  Georgia is like Alabama at this point...national title or bust.  FSU's defense can shut down the UGA offense.

And what happened to TCU in the finals?  That's at least part of what they are trying to avoid this year.  They don't want another rout in the finals.

My issue is with the talking heads and how they are not being consistent in their hand ringing.  To your point, in 2007 Boise State upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.  No one thought BS deserved to be in that bowl.  UCF could have won a championship if it were not for the same standard being applied today.  If anything, the committee has been very consistent.

so, in terms of "giant upsets" in Bowl games, we are talking Boise State in 2007 and TCU over Michigan in 2022-- 15 years apart.  Yes, upsets do happen, but "giant upsets" are extremely rare, or so it seems to me.  I haven't done any research, so I am sure some of you guys will come up with half a dozen others in the last 15 years.  But how many out of the total number of bowl games?
