I looked it up once, can't remember the exact numbers, but Nutt faced an average of like 3.5 ranked (at the time) teams per year.  Petrino faced around 4.  Bert averaged like 6 or 7.

When Nutt won the West in 2006, we beat only 2 teams with a winning SEC record. It was no where near what it is like today in SEC play.

Tennessee 5-3 in SEC play
Vandy 1-7: needed a gust of wind from Pawhl to make the game winning field goal short for Vandy.

Ole Miss 2-6
Bama 2-6
South Carolina 2-6

Lost to LSU, who was 6-2 that year.

We beat 2 ranked teams and lost to 4 ranked teams.

He, and most of the fan base I'm sure, wanted Tuberville. He was the more accomplished coach at the time. I think that's why HDN always got fired up to play him, especially that first year when he was at Ole Miss and then the whole time he was at Auburn.
