Quote from: Show-Me Hog on Sep 10, 2023, 10:37 PMThis has been the amazing thing to me so far, and it's all of our running backs. It's almost like this is what we teach.

They will be running parallel to the line (problem #1) and when they have the choice to run into a hole or run into people, they always choose running into people. (problem #2). Um, why don't you run where the people aren't? That's kind of the goal, isn't it?

Yes.  We have no instincts.  It's like Enos, Pittman and Kennedy have all our players doing algebra equations on the field in their head.

Bro, it's football.  Don't get tackled is the point.  Maybe it's too much.  Simplify shit.

Speak English doc these kids ain't scientists!

Shit's embarrassing.  Who's running this, Tommy Smith?

Can we bring our program into the 21st century please?

That run with Armstrong where he ran straight into the weakest blocker...he had big #72 leading him if cuts up field it sets up a prime opportunity for 72 to have made contact with the enemy for the first time in his life.

Cliff notes:
- we ran the ball better than we think we did, just no explosive runs.
- get use to it because Enos's system isn't designed for explosive runs
- the run game is set up by the passing game, and KJ was bad against Kent State

It seems like I recall a shitload of explosive runs in 2015-2016 by Alex Collins and Rawleigh Williams.   I even remember a long one by Jared Cornelius against LSU.

I don't think it's Enos's offense that doesn't do explosive runs.  It's probably more the backs he's had at his other stops.

I just hope we're  not descending into a season of Chad level of buffoonery. Bad snaps, bad blocking, running backs tackling themselves and seemingly running with their eyes closed is worrisome. I don't know that it's coaching as much as it is stupidity.
That slow developing swing pass to the sideline is going to get taken for pick 6 more than once against SEC teams.
The same people demanding everyone embrace your beliefs, have zero tolerance and condemn another for embracing theirs.  Oh, the irony.

We are mainly seeing a bit of growing pains from young lineman, also finding weak links here and there and running backs still running to the same spots from the old offense looking for the home run play.

What Ford was saying at the start of the season was Briles offense thru the running game offered a lot of boom or bust plays. For all the great runs there were a ton of negative loss plays killing drives. From a statistical standpoint the Enos offense should offer a better run success rate (positive yardage) and will eat clock but the backs have to take what the defense is giving and not let the play get stretched out. This offense will require the backs to find the contact and leg drive...something we seem to not be doing very well.

Think back to some of those backs like Collins, Jonathan Williams, and Rawleigh all had really excellent leg drive. Collins also made people miss, something we aren't doing much of these days. Those guys ran relentlessly...this current batch looks awesome with dump truck sized holes and not so much when they have to do real running back shit.

When I went back and watched the game again yesterday we were much better with Chamblee and Braun in the game over Manuel and Crawford. When we pulled Latham and Limmer the run was usually pretty successful. They get out and get to their spots like the veterans they are. I really didn't notice any other lineman pulling to that extent...Chamblee did on the Armstrong run and it was there to be had. In any case I think we'll see more pin and pull type stuff.

There were comments in the first game about playing Chamblee too many snaps. I'm not sure what that was about...perhaps they don't think his stamina is up to snuff. Maybe he had a injury in summer workouts...don't know.

Ford was saying Johnson had the best YAC among the backs a couple years ago. That was as a gap running one-cut running back. Johnson before the knee injury had a bit of wiggle to his game for a guy his size. He's not showing much power from what I'm seeing right now and certainly no wiggle. Maybe he still needs to get into the flow of the game. It's hard to look like anything only getting a couple of carries. For me the only back I'm liking in this offense is AJ Green who's running like a older veteran running back that understands he's got to get what the defense is giving. Rocket is going to get healthy and do Rocket things. #7 is going to have his moments once this whole thing has a bit more time to come together.

I knew we were in trouble yesterday when the teevees showed the OL lineup and 4 of the 5 linemen were smiling white boys that looked like they share the same hairdresser and couldn't wait for the post-game Bible study on the book of Job.

What I wouldn't give for another Dan Skipper in war paint.

His offense CAN produce them provided the back gets daylight and can make yards after contact.  The Enos offense isn't predicated on explosive runs and isn't designed TO produce them, like Briles's offense is.  Enos prefers to use the run to set up the pass.  Briles used different blocking schemes and window dressing to give the backs more yards BEFORE contact, however, as we all witnessed that is very boom or bust.  Enos prefers a more conservative approach, much less window dressing, and blocking schemes that seem (at least to me) to be set up to be able to run or pass out of it so that the box gets more crowded... which means YAC is super important.  But that's just my worthless $0.02.

Adam Ford had a few tweets about the scheme differences between Enos and Briles with regard to the running game.

Basically with the Briles system you sort feel out the hole and/or run parallel to the line and hole will (usually) be there.

With Enos, you've got to hit the hole going downhill with a head full of steam. If you break a tackle chances are you might just take it the distance.

Feels like we have a situation where we have backs accustomed to a finesse system having to learn a completely different run scheme and having difficulty adjusting to it.

That's how I've described it before too. I hated it because in the SEC those holes would often close as soon as you stepped into them. With how SEC defenses have looked so far this year, that kind of offense might have feasted.

I went back and watched a few games from 2014-2016 (I know Enos wasn't here in 2014), but you're spot on.

Collins was the best back I've ever seen at keeping his feet moving and squeezing out a few extra yards when he should've been down. He also had incredible vision. There's a reason he had a decent NFL career vs. a guy like Trent Richardson who busted out of the league in 3 years.

Both Williamses were great leg drivers and both hit the hole like a wrecking ball.

I had the same thought as you in that it felt like I was watching completely different types of backs from the ones we have now.

I think his offense could've done well this year given our line deficiencies and the stable of experienced backs we have, but the new clock rules aren't going to bode well for that offense (or at least how he runs it).

Basically if you piss away your first 2 drives as Briles often did, the other team can play keep away and you might only get 1 more drive in the first half.

Arkansas only had 4 drives in the first half against Kent State, and 8 for the entire game.

I didn't watch this as closely as I probably would have liked in the Kent State game, but one thing I'm interested in is how spread out our offensive formations are this year versus last.  Briles would have his wideouts almost on the sideline, opening massive areas of field for a back to get loose if his line/TE/etc could just block one or two guys.  That to me was the biggest advantage of his system in the run game.

The one play where it occurred to me to think about this Saturday was one where we ran a very tight formation by today's standards.

Splits too tight. Everything slow developing. No other SEC team would've hired Enos at this point.

I'd like to see if we lined up that wide on passing plays too. From a defender's perspective that just gives the ability to play inside and use the sideline to your advantage.

I think it also had at least a little to do with our unwillingness and/or inability to throw over the middle in previous years.
