The best case for Sam (because unless we lose to FIU I think he gets 2024, so might as well pull a Monty Python and look on the bright side of life):

Fixed the defense from 2022.

Lost 2 TEs including a good one early so line and passing game affected.

Enos was a mistake, corrected in mid-year, but will take new offensive direction next year.

Buyout too much, reduces next year.

One shitty thing among many is he has to play Hugh Freeze again next year, who CLEARLY is Pittman kryptonite.

I  have plenty of displeasure with the season and with the coaching job of Pittman. But the guy's not a piece of shit. It's the most boomer of takes to expect him to walk away from contractually obligated money because he "loves the helmet". No one else here would do any different.

Who said that?  Sam was damned near 60 years old when he said that.  That's old enough to know better than to say that kind if thing and no expect some ruffled feathers when you turn out to be about nothing but money.

There are plenty of people who feel the same way.  But I am not seeing or hearing stories that support the theory that he is lazy, etc.  Obviously, you can say the way the team plays is evidence of that, but I am not at all sure about that.  When Bielema was on the decline, there were plenty of stories in Fayetteville about him missing meetings with recruits, being passed out drunk on Dickson, etc.  Nothing like that about Pittman. 

Maybe he isn't lazy.  Maybe he just isn't very good at what he's doing.

and make an offense that fits what Criswell can do or else just go with a kid if we have a 4 star and make it for him

Since if Sam stays it is make or break he should hire an OC to do what Criswell can do and then recruit to that system going forward.

His buyout will be lower but we will still be paying another $6mm salary, so it's not really saving any money on a lame duck.

I'd much rather be competing for coaches now than I had after next season. It's the law of averages if nothing else. Not many SEC openings this season means they'll likely be some wholesale changes next off-season with half the SEC EAST due to turnover after failing to make headway against Georgia/Tenn. That's without what reactions there may be to new schools coming into the conference. Drinkwitz could very possibly work his way into getting a bigger gig either this off-season or next and the only highly coveted job in the SEC is A&M at the moment.

A&M is in a spot where they could be looking to make another splash hire but it's also possible they make an under stated hire like the Traylor dude that doesn't move the needle but probably kicks the can down the road for the next 6 or 7 years while they eat the Jimbo contract. Traylor I'd wager would do as good or better than Jimbo.

Kentucky has been extremely patient with Stoops who has taken that program out of the gutter and moved it onto a narrow shoulder on a busy freeway. I've said this the last few off-seasons but at some point you may see him either drop his panties and get out or they end up pulling the plug on him if the fan base has gone stale. My guess is the Ky football is damn happy with their 6 or 7 wins each season.

So anyway yeah maybe we save ourselves a large buyout this off-season but will ultimately fuck ourselves if their gamble on Pittman fails. I can't possibly believe they think Pittman is their "guy"...you can do lot of quantum math on this subject and see that the mistakes were made very early with regard lack of loading up on lineman early on...we kept a lot of older Morris holdovers and didn't cycle those guys out of the program quick enough. It was more or less a "win now" mentality and we paid for it this season. Maybe he can fix it with more NIL money. I'm not confident. Do they bring in another OC that has head coaching experience? Does Sam need someone behind the scenes holding his hand? It sure seemed like he missed Odom this season.
