Imagine thinking Sam would ruin his golden goose for a sixth team QB.

Quote from: egregious on Jun 01, 2023, 01:13 PMgotta play 9 league games yearly to be able to see all the teams home-and-home every 4 years
With 8 a year you would have to halve the games with 4 teams.  With that I would rather split the games to see everybody once within each 4 years rather than home and homes back to back.
It takes a long time to work this in where Arkansas has to travel to A&M, Georgia, and Alabama in the same year 3 years in a row in order to get things straightened out on the schedule.

8 conference games, no divisions for the 2024 season.

in addition must schedule one game with a p5 opponent or major independent.

If you ever wondered whether college presidents, TV executives, and head coaches cared about the fans...there is your answer.

sankey says it's temporary and will probably change the next season.  probably.

At this point I don't blame the SEC for staying at 8 if ESPN isn't offering more money. It's 12.5% more inventory with 2 of the biggest brands in CFB being added. Once we go to 9 there's no going back so they can't ask for the money later. Why not do a temporary divisionless 8 game schedule that includes the biggest rivalries for the time being and wait for ESPN to come back to the table?

My question is how broke is ESPN? They should be pouncing at the chance to air a 9 game SEC schedule with OU and UT. Why aren't they?
The Lord wants you to put your foot on their balls and believe in it. 'Cuz that's what wins football games. Not jumping offsides like a bunch of wimps and faggots. I don't care what those pinkos over in Russia say. You want to be a loser? You go live in Russia. I'm a winner. I'm an American.

the contract was already signed before those two teams joined. now i seriously doubt either the conference or the network was clueless on their move, but it seems the sec should have at least brought this up before the ink was dry.

Agree. Which tells me it really did come out of nowhere and ESPN obviously wasn't the catalyst for the move as some suggested.

Did you watch the last 3 Star Wars films and the new Little Mermaid? In all seriousness, I heard Disney is looking to cut 3 billion over the next year and has already begun selling off some of its assets.

This is exactly what it's all about.  They will force Espin's hand on this one.

ESPN ie Disney only has so much $$ to dole out and their take from cable is not the cash cow it once was.

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2022/05/12/Media/ESPN.aspx

Disney reported linear networks "earned $2.8 billion" in the most recent quarter that ended April 2. This money "comes largely" from the subscriber fees ESPN and its network of affiliates, like ESPN2, charge cable distributors to carry its content. Disney's DTC division, which includes Disney+ and ESPN+, lost $887M in Q2. The company "ascribed the losses" at ESPN+ to high sports programming costs and a decrease in income from UFC pay-per-view events due to "a drop in average buys per event." Disney "needs many more subscribers" at ESPN+ to "make it profitable," and clearly "expects the disparate results between linear and direct-to-consumer to one day change." Whether the cable bundle "could survive" with ESPN available as a subscription-only stream is "surely a question." But at some point "as more events bleed" into ESPN+, "fans might question whether it would be cheaper to cut the cord and get the stream" (THEATHLETIC.com, 5/11). In L.A., Ryan Faughnder notes Disney+ "added nearly 8 million subscribers" during Q2. The service now "has 137.7 million subscribers." ESPN+ "added 1 million subscribers," bringing its total to 22.3 million (L.A. TIMES, 5/12).

No doubt DISNEY is worried about the economy as are several other multi-national corporations deriving a significant percentage of income from the American consumer.  Culture wars are costly.  Ask Target and Budweiser.  I saw an article linked from Drudge that claimed significant numbers of the LBGQT community were leaving Florida.  I chuckled as I wondered if they thought Floridians would line the border and beg them to stay.

Sankey is right about one thing.  Continue to have the best conference, the best teams, and the best games and the money will follow.  I just hope that we fans don't get more inconvenienced and too squeezed financially in the process.
Arkansas didn't need the death penalty.  We had JEFF LONG.

yeah the insta account is gone. Wonder how they'll refute the snapchats. This kid probably didn't shove 15 hot wheels up someone's ass but I'm sure he's a POS that mommy and daddy will spend millions on to defend and then he will go elsewhere and keep doing his schtick. Whatever. He likes people to take shits in his mouth supposedly...I guess that's all you need to know
