I don't think Sam is a great coach. I also don't think we will hire anyone that will move the needle. We're gonna spend more money for the same results. We have been the epitome of wash, rinse, repeat (sans Petrino).

We expect the administration to pay up $10M+ to get rid of a coach who will be replaced with another coach who will likely provide the same results. Yet we won't spend the money to get better players.

Coaches we've had since we joined the SEC: Crowe/Kines, Ford, Nutt, Petrino, Smith, Bert, Chud, Pittman. Pittman is the 3rd winningest of the bunch even after following Chud and playing a 10 game SEC slate in '20. Only trying to say I don't expect us to hire a better coach.

You're completely missing my point. I'm saying to PAY FOR PLAYERS if you want better results. Obviously changing coaches every 5 fucking years ain't cutting it.

Because we hire mediocrity.  Hire someone decent.  And you can say whatever you want, ain't nobody wasting NIL on Sam Pittman.  He sucks and it will be wasted.

Barton Fink

Sure, let's pay a $10-$15M buyout to bring in someone to produce the same results. We'll just pay more for the same piece of shit. Makes sense.

You also have the best coach we've ever had by a landslide standing on the sidelines doing what he did to make us win games. You  don't think you can win more games getting Petrino more talented players?

Barton Fink

Can someone give me 1 coach that will 100% come here and immediately turn us into an 8 win program?

I can tell you one who 100% can't.  That's all I need to know.

I'm not militant about firing Sam this year, but I fully expect that if he's retained we'll be having this same conversation in a year.  That's even if the NIL budget doubles or triples, which is highly unlikely given how unhappy the average fan is with the program right now.

For the sake of argument, suppose the power brokers who are sitting on their money right now ante'd up to double our current NIL on the condition we hired a new coach.  Would you rather pay Sam's buyout and get the NIL boost with a different coach, or keep Sam for another year at the same or lower contribution rates?

There is a precedent, given what happened when we replaced Muss with Calipari.  A lot of that was due to Cal's friendship with Tyson, but not all.  Other big boosters stepped up as well.

If Sam can't, and you don't have a coach thst will 100% come here and immediately turn in better results, what are you gaining? You're spending $10M-15M for nothing.

Seems like a lot of wasted money just to hope something works different than the countless times you tried it before. Maybe it's the engineer in me....

is that what's really being discussed? i would think just about everyone would rather see pittman leave AND get a huge nil boost.

maybe i'm reading it wrong, but i don't think barton is advocating for pittman staying.

That's the point.  College sports runs on hope.  Same with NIL.  Boosters and fans got to have hope.  Hire any reasonable candidate and you will see an immediate bump in NIL funds because hope will have returned.  It may not last.  It might be temporary, but it would be there for a bit.  People have already made up their minds with Sam.  Really they had last year.  Only the hiring of Petrino brought even a glimmer of hope out.

I think there's an appetite to pay for players, but not to pay for players and let Pittman fuck them up.  I think something like is being done with Calipari could happen, with grass roots level support, even without a Tyson benefactor.

I would like to see a philosophy of NIL usage to be developed.  My opinion is that if we're prepared to pay for five star linemen and defensive backs, we can get by with three star skill position players.  The lines on both sides of the ball are the straw that stirs the drink.

The only thing 100% certain is that Sam is who he's shown himself to be.

Large buyouts are an unfortunate cost of doing business.   Sam's buyout is something like 14th in the SEC.

It's not like you're just plugging in the same input to get the same output.  Each coach is different.  The next guy could be another Sam or the next Saban.  We won't know unless we try.

If we are just going to worry about saving money, and if pretty much anyone will give us the same results, fire Sam and find someone who will do the job for $1MM per year.

That's how Kiffin did it.  Most of their spending this year was on defense.  He knew he could trick up the offense with the guys he already had.

I'd do it for a mil. Let the coordinators coordinate and still have about the same record.
The same people demanding everyone embrace your beliefs, have zero tolerance and condemn another for embracing theirs.  Oh, the irony.

I'm not in favor of hiring Bobby, but if it's all about NIL make him or Williams the head coach at a low salary and use the difference to buy them a roster.
