Quote from: Thin Red Swine on Dec 03, 2024, 06:57 PMYou know this is the part where the response is that three past coaches consistently outperformed his talent.

It can be done.

I know I would be excited and willing to donate more if that were the change announced next week.

3 past coaches? You mean Petrino? The SEC is far tougher than it even was under Nutt. No idea who your other person is. Im guessing Broyles in the 60'?

Do you think Rhett Lashlee and his staff (big downgrade in OC) with less talent than 3/4 of the conference can win 8 games on average?

I'm willing to find out. Do you know for sure Lashlee wouldn't keep Bobby? I mean, since we're purely talking hypotheticals.

Where does SMU stand in the ACC on the talent spectrum?

red death

The thing is we had the talent this year to win 9 if we didn't step on our own dick.

OSU we lost despite having 6900 yards of offense.  Fumbles, pick six.

Aggie we fumbled and gave them a TD.  That's the difference there.

Even LSU we had a chance until the interception at our 1 yard line.

Fumbled late against Texas driving.

On and on.  The talent isn't our problem.  We toed up with everyone except Miss.

Agreed.

And even Ole Miss wasn't that much of a talent issue.

For me, keeping BP is big. I think he made chicken salad out of chicken shit this year.

ACC has been so bad I have no clue. I know the coaches in the SEC are much better.

I think we can get better with (only) a new coach but not much better.

It's funny, when Lashlee was OC and people mentioned him as a candidate people would've burned trucks if he was hired.

You raised the issue of relative talent, which I agree is obviously important so I'm just curious if Lashlee has outperformed that this year.

I never said anything about him one way or the other before but what he's done this year is impressive. Maybe he's another Stan Heath. I don't know.

Our talent threw picks and fumbled the football! You guys are nuts.

The same people saying we have talent are in the game thread saying "Green sucks...Oline is awful...secondsry is shit...punter sucks...Jackson is always hurt..."

75% of college football games are won by 1 posession. The most talented team wins those games.

Thin Red Swine

The team making the fewest turnovers wins way more often than not too.

I've made comments about Green but not that he sucks. He's careless with the ball and a head case. He's still EXTREMELY talented.

I've not made any of those other comments.

Barton Fink

It's a common them in every fame thread .

Green is not an accurate passer. He locks on receivers. He missed A TON of open receivers (many that would've scored). He's fumble probe. Yes he is a gifted athlete but he is not a very good QB.

If you want to pass some blame to coaching for turnovers, fine but player's deserve equal blame (at minimum).

Thin Red Swine

And again, I have not said anything different than that.

Players make the mistakes, and coaches must hold them accountable.

Most football games are determined by errors.  Turnovers, stupid penalties, special teams mistakes, and taking advantage of them are where most games are determined.  The other issue is stamina.  Sam doesn't drive fitness, nor do they drill constantly or have a team accountability about mistakes.  The bottom line is Sam is too comfortable with losing; great coaches are driven from a hatred of losing more than their desire to win.

The Whyte Boar

Yeah, Sam doesn't mind losing at all.

So what does the coach get blamed for, exactly? Your players fuck up and it's not your fault. Oh you can't get better players? That's the fans fault now. All while raking in millions. What a sweet gig.

Quote from: Barton Fink on Dec 03, 2024, 06:39 PMWe are your expectations for the program? I get the sense most think we should avg 8 wins a year with 6 being the floor (once every 5 years) and 10-11 (every 5 years).

Is that correct?

We are 15th in HS recruiting amongst conference teams. We are 15th in MIL.

Let's say we fire Pittman tomorrow
and hire the best option out there which most seem to want Lashlee (even though he's an extremely long shot).

You replace SP/BP/TWill with Lashlee/Rob Likens/Scott Symons

Say you get a 10% bump in NIL and now you're at 12th in talent.

Can that get you to an average of 8 wins a year? I dont see how you can expect to get to an 8 win average without getting to a top 8 (middle of the pack) in talent. You're asking a coach to greatly outperform their talent. I don't see how that can be a consistent expectation.

Would it shock you to know that SMU's NIL is way lower than most people think based on their history?  And that it isn't near the top of the ACC?

So I heard from someone with ties to Lashlee (second/third hand).

I don't think we should average 8 wins, but we should get there more often than we end up 6-6 or below.

You are basing your expectations on past results, which is reasonable if you don't know how the program got to those numbers.  Those of us who watched the games happen realize (or should) that those numbers were mostly skewed by poor coaching hires.  By bringing in a functional retard as an interim in what would've otherwise been an 8-4 season worst case...replacing him with a guy whose stated goal was to "out-Alabama Alabama" i.e playing the same style with less talent.  Then by firing that guy after below average results and replacing him with the worst coach in SEC history.

All you had to do is watch the games and how they played out to see the following about Pittman's tenure post-2021 (I think he did fine and met or exceeded expectations given those circumstances).  He went 6-6 regular season in a year where his talent and the way the games progressed dictated he should have won at least 8-9.  He went 4-8 in a year where he should have won six, blowing three home games where he had equal or greater talent (BYU, MSU, Auburn).

No coach is going to win all of his one score games.  At Arkansas, expecting him to win most of them is too much.  It is not unreasonable at all to think our coach should win at or close to half of such games.  Sam is 6-17 in that regard.  That is not a talent issue...since the start of 2022 Sam has lost the following to teams that I contend were no better than equal to us in terms of roster:

2022: Liberty, Missouri
2023: BYU, Miss State (this doesn't even take Auburn into account because they smoked us, but that team was horrible)
2024:  Oklahoma State, Missouri.

I'm being generous and not including our annual pissing away of the Aggy game, simply because their recruiting rankings show them to be better even though the actual games say othewise.

Finally, and I realize that this contradicts me a little bit given that he's now on staff, but these mother fuckers broke what was performing as a top five program over some HR bullshit that any serious program would have found a far less severe punishment for or swept it under the rug completely.  When they did that, they effectively promised us that it was the program, not the coach, that was responsible for all that winning.  By firing the best coach we've had since Broyles they set the expectations for all that guy's successors to the same level.  I expect them to get close to that level of success, or at least to keep trying to get there with all their might to atone for their idiotic, knee-jerk decision.

One other question...where are you getting that we are 15th in NIL?  I haven't seen a published ranking of those numbers.  As of about two years ago I was told we were firmly in the middle of the pack (which I assumed to be 7-10 range).

Barton Fink

I'm honestly flabbergasted you guys don't think we have a talent issue. Thst doesn't mean we don't have some talented players but as a whole, if you line up our 2 deep against other conference foes 2 deep, we lose out to all but a couple.

Just as we've lost (or played poorly ) to teams with less talent we've besten sone (or played wrll) against) teams with better talent.  TN this year. OM a couple years back. At Bama with Treylon. Rhose gsmes happen to every team.

The path to getting consistent better results is to get better players. No coach is going to consistently win with less talent than most of their opponents. I don't care who the coach is.

Biddy has constantly said we are at the bottom of football NIL money. He even stated yesterday that our football NIL is 2/3 what we pay for basketball.
