LSU was not a marquee program prior to Nick. Best case is they were Arkansas.  In the 90s, they were definetly worse than Arkansas.  The right head coach can change the course of history.

True.  Same is true for Auburn and Tennessee.  We were at worst equals with each of those prior to entering the SEC.   

LSU and Auburn have a massive advantage in natural recruiting areas, primarily due to demographics.  But until around 1990 those didn't translate into better results. 

I mainly posted this (and thanks Buff for posting the text since it's behind a paywall) because I've had people tell me dating back to the Nutt years that not even Saban could win a title here.

I mainly posted this (and thanks Buff for posting the text since it's behind a paywall) because I've had people tell me dating back to the Nutt years that not even Saban could win a title here. 

I heard so many people tell me during those years that LSU was simply better than us because they were always going to just be LSU.  Same with Alabama.  Between 1979 with Bear Bryant and 2009 with Nick Saban, Alabama won one title in 1992.  Before Nick Saban's 2003 title at LSU, their last one was 1958.  Auburn's last before 2010 was in 1957.  Before Fulmer in 1998 Tennessee's last AP championship was in 1951.  We are who we are just because Frank said potential. 

Arkansas fans by and large just embrace mediocrity.  Very few during the Petrino years thought that success was any more than lightning in a bottle.  In fact as soon as Bert's struggles began the fanbase went back to its Nutt-era argument of "Who are we going to be able to get that will do any better?"  As if... we hadn't been doing far better just a few years prior.  It's what we do, and therefore we are a football program that is comfortable with losing.  We had a coach that hated losing more than he liked winning, and the AD got rid of him at the first chance as the fanbase (and state media) cheered.  Integrity!

We'll do well to make a bowl game this year, again, but the fanbase has no one to blame but themselves.  Not the coach.  Not the Athletic Director.  Or a Board of Trustees, or even big NIL donors.  And the school won't give a shit, because people will keep being "true fans" and "supporting the kids" and buying tickets, concessions, and merchandise anyway.

I threw up a graph that showed African American population distribution.

I thought my graph (not mine, the internet's) supported your statement.

When we came into the SEC, I think we had a legitimate chance to compete and win a SECC. We were winning consistently, we got to a couple of Championship games, but it all changed when Aggie got into the SEC. We lost the Texas recruiting edge and it's been downhill ever since.

my point was they have always got who they want in state, even in the b12. texass is who they have to worry about, not arkansas. we rarely "stole" anyone from texas that they wanted regardless what conference they were in.
