I can't believe anyone actually thinks FSU is one of the four best teams in the country.  I can comprehend why there is even a conversation about this. 

They are one of three undefeated teams that played a major conference schedule. Therefore, based on the empirical evidence, I believe they're one of the three best teams in the nation. You and the committee have no objective reason to believe otherwise. You may have an OPINION they're not, but we all know what opinions are worth, and the evidence says otherwise.

Here's the main mental hurdle.  ESPN paid for the event and they're bringing the folks they want.  It's about money. All big time college sports are about is money. Dont like it go watch D3.  It's about to be nothing more than money.  So we need the money and benefit with Bama in there.  Don't care that fsu got passed over.  They can go fuck off.  I hope Bama beats the shit out of fucking cheating Michigan.

The problem is that no one uses any objective measure to determine who plays in the playoff. 

We all had criticisms of the BCS formula, but at least it was an objective number that was difficult to impossible for the TV rights holders and the conference commissioners to manipulate.  If we still had some sort of formula instead of a committee full of stakeholders and their inherent biases then there would still be bitching, but it would have less merit.  Whether intentional or otherwise, those choosing the teams consider tradition, conference affiliation, and TV viewership.  None of those should be valid criteria for picking the four best or most deserving teams. 

Applying the BCS formula to this year's teams would have resulted in the following:

1. Michigan
2. Washington
3. Alabama
4. Florida State

It would just be a different group bitching had this been the result, but "that's how the computer ranked them" would have been a better justification than "well, we don't think this team with a better record was as good as this one because their QB is injured."

Re: Texas, there was an old precedent that could've been used to leave them out. There were times in the past where a "big win" early in the season was discounted because it was so early in the season.

But it's not a real playoff.  It's a made for TV event, a reality show based on college football.  ESPN paid for it and wants the four teams they believe will deliver the most eyeballs for these three games.  They do have to sell the teams in as part of the "story", so there is no way in hell they would exclude the SEC unless the best teams both had 2 losses.  No way they exclude Michigan despite the cheating thing.  They had no plausible way to exclude Washington though they like to; they have zero audience.  Texas rings the bell.  And there you go.  Sorry your number didn't pull up FSU, it's show business. 

The future eventually will set for the SEC/big superconference.  Divisions that play thru a structured playoff like the nfl.  Where shitty division winners get in ahead of teams with better records but that's the structure.
