Quote from: Piggielicious on Oct 02, 2023, 06:50 AMSam may have pulled us out of the gutter, but if the season ends as badly as it looks like it may, he very will could take us right back there as a job no one wants if enough talent portals.

This could have been a good to great year had he just been willing to pay Briles a little more money.

If history is any indication, the leadership at Arkansas will hire the wrong guy to replace him. Hatfield over Johnson, Nutt over Tuberville, Morris over Norvell, and Pittman over Kiffin, etc.

Throw in a big raise after one mediocre season, and we will be right back here in 4 to 5 years. Wash, rinse, repeat.
This was not going to be a great year under any scenario. Talent is way down.

Meh, that just seems like an excuse.

Where is the talent on this team?

Not really.  This is a bullshit excuse.  Our defense is more talented than it was last year.  The OL have a lot more talent than they are showing, but none of them have been developed properly, and in some cases they aren't playing the most talented ones (specifically E'Marion Harris).

We aren't as talented as Alabama or Georgia and never will be.  You can add aTm to that list as well.  We have as much or more talent than Ole Miss, Miss State, Auburn, and Missouri on our remaining schedule.  We have far more than BYU...other than a couple of OL they don't have many if any who would see the field here. Our roster is as talented as it ever has been outside of the McFadden years and the Matt Jones/Shawn Andrews group, at a time when most of our division is down.  This is 100% on coaching.

Defense statistically has been better. DL has no talent at all. None will see the next level. Linebackers are terrible in run fits. Midmajor talents there. Corners are okay but McAdoo done and McGlothern having to play out of position because of the toe. Safeties are the worst in the league. Worse than Vandy. No talent on OL. Not a single one has any bend. None will see the next level. Receivers are D-2 transfers and it shows.

The defense played well enough to win the game.

The OL has talented players who have received zero coaching or development. Scheme also works against them...they have spent their entire careers in a spread with wide splits up until now.  Limmer will play in the NFL, at least as a backup.  They have at least as much talent as some of the lines Petrino had, and he was able to set records.  The problem is 10% talent and 90% coaching, at least as it relates to competing with/beating the teams in our cohort, and showing up against better opponents.

The scheme is pitiful. I don't even know how you would try to describe our offensive philosophy. Now you've got Enos emailing students back lol.

I think Sam is finally seeing the dark side of coaching. It was all atta boys the first couple of years when he pulled us out of the shitter. People are getting more demanding now. I don't think he wants to go through all the darkness.

He would be a fool to want it.  His best move is to get out right now.  Go see HY and tell him he wants out and work out a deal.  Save us some money on his buyout and let him get on with his life.

I hope someone close to him encourages him to do this.

I was thinking in my gloom that he would have been incredibly "lucky" to have gotten a sickness that was not life threatening but debilitating enough to not be able to continue coaching sometime around May of this year and he could have been a state hero forever.

I really think Sam was motivated to prove he could be a head coach.  And in his mind those first two seasons proved it.  After that, he went on cruise control.  He never wanted the long term grind.  Unless he is completely checked out, the next year and a half will be the kind of experience that takes half a dozen years off of your life.  I hope he is smart enough to realize that.

Never thought winning games as "Demanding," but I get your point. He thought he could skate like last year and now it is come full circle.

It is when you consider that your job comes down to 2 numbers, your entire peer group is going to end up even on average for their 2 numbers, you have to grab some extra share of that from that peer group to be deemed "successful", and they all work 15 hour days to take some of your share from you.

You would think you would figure out what you are getting into by watching it for 40 years as an assistant.

He has already been "successful".  He showed he could be a head coach and now he is wealthy by almost any measure.  He checked out last year and it won't get any better.

Cornhogio

KJ got fucked in this deal.  Changing offenses in his senior year was a shit thing to do to him.  Might as well go in raw and see if Criswell can do better in this scheme.

Did we even have a list of OC's to hire if we lost Briles, or was this a panic hire?  If it was a thoughtful hire, then the thinking was dogshit.

Maybe we need a "Consultant" to "help" Sam for the rest of the year.

I wish there was a way to blacklist agents in our hiring/contracting process.  Sexton has fucked us every chance he gets, and with no real consequences to him.

I think Sam wanted Enos from the beginning and as soon as Briles left, that was his one and only call. He has become Bert, eater of worlds.

You mean someone like the attorney/agent he kicked to the curb?

You guys under estimate these coaches willingness to go down with the ship and why not when there is a huge pay day that comes with it. It's more profitable to lose than it is to win for Pittman if you consider it's likely he's done getting contract extensions here.

Legacy? Hell hes going for 20 million you guys crazy
