Quote from: DirkPiggler on Oct 04, 2023, 07:50 AMNorvell's biggest selling point to me wasn't his record.  At the time when we were able to get him, he was 18-8, which was good for Memphis but not elite (and a hell of a lot better than the doofus we ended up hiring, in the same league, at a lesser program, with ass stompings head to head, but I digress).  And the pro-dipshit faction liked to point out that he was following another successful coach there and still using a lot of that guy's players.

What was obvious about him to me was his attention to detail.  WRs ran crisp routes.  Plays got in on time and correctly.  There were few stupid penalties...false starts, procedure, delay of game, etc.  And his special teams unit were as good as some of the Frank Beamer Va Tech squads.  Being detail oriented is the number one skill in a successful head coach, not recruiting, not strategy, not a cool cowboy hat and sunglasses (although Deion is supposedly a stickler for the little stuff as well).  We have had exactly one head coach who was good at making sure the small details were drilled into the players' heads so that they could execute without thinking.  Norvell would have made two, and likely would have had similar success to the other guy by now.

To have a record like that at Memphis, you have to win your close games. You have to be detail oriented to win close games.

Somehow it's now taboo to talk about Petrino and one should move on, but he is the only modern measuring stick that we have for great teams. His details helped us win close games. When we lost games it seemed like we were just outmanned.

Sorry, but that typo/correction is just funny coming from you.

Are there any NFL head coaches who were great in college that we might poach?

Pete Carroll? Arkansas ties! Too old, though.

Gruden. You know he almost came here one time before?

Quote from: Show-Me Hog on Oct 03, 2023, 05:20 PMI know most woopiggers do not give two fucks about what others think about Arkansas football.

However, when it comes to making coaching firing and hiring decisions, I think Hunter and the administration have to think about that. Anyone we would want to hire, by definition comes from outside Arkansas football.

To the college football world that doesn't live and breathe Razorbacks, who is Sam Pittman? Even RIGHT NOW?? He's the success story of an aw shucks good ole boy offensive lineman coach who got his chance and turned around the Razorback program as a head coach. That's who he is. He's not a failure. He's not doing a bad job. He's a tremendous success. This is how he is seen in the eyes of the college football world.  The stink of last year and this year has not yet made it to the outside world, I guarandamntee you.

Does Hunter fire that guy?
I've been wanting to post something similar, but have been 2 pages behind in this thread for the last week. I get wanting a change, but I hate how our fanbase goes about it. Bringing the man's physical appearance into the conversation, roasting him on social media, and calling out the strength coach's wife (and yes, I get that she put herself into the mix there and opened herself up to everything that comes with it). We never seem to have clean breaks.

Like any other rabid fanbase, we make ourselves look stupid, but it's worse with Sam. He's beloved in the eyes of the national media (that same media that doesn't really pay attention to what Arkansas does until we step out of line and forget our place). I can hear it now if he is fired or even retires at the end of the season. "See? Look what these loons did to a good coach and even better man. Who do they think they are, Alabama? Good luck to the next guy who has to follow Pittman and doesn't win immediately. They are unrealistic and should just be happy with being allowed to roll out a football on Saturdays."

To bad Lance Leipold is nearly 60. He is willing to change his offense based on the players ability. And he wins.

This is pretty much true, I am afraid. I don't think Sam's going anywhere this year.

But when he does, someone needs to take a serious look at Jeff Traylor.
Apparently retarded member of the "fucking old people" crowd as defined by Swahili Steve.

Fuck those fans and fuck the media. They said the same thing about Nutt and to an extent Bret.

We are going to be ridiculed no matter what we say or do. Better to do it this year than wait and go to Chad Morris levels again.

Yep.  Some of those same people said we didn't give Morris enough time.  None of them had our program's best interest in mind.

For $7 mil I'll put a webcam in front of my shitter so I can answer fan questions while I drop the Longhorns off in College Station.

The reality is if you want good coaching get better players. We need a coach that can recruit in every facet:  high school, portal, Jc, grad transfers and attract better players.

I thought Sam would make us a destination for nfl worthy linemen.  A great o line makes a team great.

We need a coach that's dynamic in recruiting and program visibility.  Who will be the next Deion?  That's what we need.

We have never and will never be able to compete in this league on talent.  That is why we need a coach like Petrino was here, an elite developer of mid-tier talent with the ability to outscheme the other teams fairly regularly.  That limits our upside, but it's the best we can hope for barring a massive inflow of quality DL and LB into the Arkansas high school ranks.

Even in the SWC under Broyles, Holtz and Hatfield we were usually outmanned against the bigger Texas schools.  That is a big reason why our bowl record was so shabby.

Believe it or not, we have more 4 star olineman on the roster than many SEC schools. I read that somewhere.

They're just young, undeveloped, poorly coached, and in a new offense that everyone is apparently struggling with.

Texzilla

If your players are struggling with your brainiac offense in October you should have either figured out a scheme your players can execute or be fired.  Enos it's time to pack your fucking bags.
