It is rare for players who have played 4,5,6 years in college to go in the first round, or at least top 20, these days. NBA drafts on potential, and most of those spots go to freshmen and foreigners.

The NBA has drafted on perceived potential for at least since the early 90s. I guess if you want to get more deliberate about it you can probably go back to the KG/Kobe draft which I believe was 1995 or 96...that's really when the worm turned.

The NBA also went thru it's infatuation with foreign born players for a while, which pushed a lot of college guys out of the 1st round and a good many out of the 2nd as well. There were a good many duds in those years coming from the European areas.

I think the league has gotten a lot more analytical in how it grades players and understanding what they think they are going to get out of them. A guy like Jaylin Williams didn't measure out as some kind of high pick but I think the Thunder saw him as more than just a development guy. I'm not sure he spent a ton of time in the G...he seemed to be more of a reserve player. Great teammate hard to want to put off that roster. And now he's getting some minutes from what I've seen.

Exactly. I can't pull for Florida but I will absolutely pull for Fland. Even on the bench recovering from his surgery he was still engaged and a supportive teammate. He even came back to try to help us advance in the tournament. I have no ill will against him at all.
