Quote from: Hogfan58 on Dec 01, 2024, 06:05 AMRecruiting base is what nobody wants to talk about, but it is what we don't have. The state does not produce enough D1 talent to be "our base", so we always had to rely on TX. Once Aggie came into the SEC, that killed our pitch of "you get to play in the SEC". With OU now in, that kills OK. Every state around us can offer better $$, better programs, better coaches, better opportunities. We never got 4 or 5 star kids and we won't now. I think we'll have to over-perform to win 8-9 games, and I don't think we can do that on a regular basis in the SEC.

We are recruiting in the same basic range as we always have.  Nutt, Petrino, Bert, and everyone since in the era of recruiting rankings have finished somewhere between 15th and 30th nationally.  Usually we fall somewhere in the mid to low 20s.

That limits our ceiling significantly.  We will never be Alabama, Georgia, or LSU as a result.  What we can and should be is equal to or better than Ole Miss, Miss State, and Missouri.  Anything they can accomplish, we can as well.

The biggest difference right now is in leadership.  That's not just strategy, game management, or player development either. The right coach will maximize NIL spending by boosters.  He will recruit nearer the top of our historical range. And the resulting success will improve fan interest and morale, which makes the NIL fund get even bigger over time, possibly allowing us to punch even further above our weight class as time progresses.

Dave Van Horn should be the model we use.  He built his program by getting players from this region and from cold weather states that were underrecruited, and getting the most out of them.  He built fan support in the process, and used his success with limited talent to gain access to more fertile recruiting zones, upping the program's profile even further.  While enjoying this success we woke up one day and were universally regarded as a top five program nationally.

And our conference is every bit as difficult in baseball as football, maybe even tougher.  We are at every bit the disadvantage in local talent as we are in football relative to our peers.  If we can do it in baseball, we can in football.  But it isn't a quick fix.  Every "one more year" we spend trying to do the same thing with the same guy and expecting different results puts us further away from eventual success, and makes it that much harder to attract the type of leader who can implement the process.

Hip replacement recovery is surprisingly not as long as you would think.

Granted the people I know who had it were a few years younger and a lot more fit than Sam.  But they were back on their feet doing at least some limited work pretty soon after surgery.

Great, we can expect Arkansas Ortho commercials with him on it all next year.

I'll throw in the towel. You guys are right. All we need is a new staff.

Just get a coach to come into a program that averages 6 wins a year for 32 years. Hands down the worst in state talent of any team in our conference. We have one of the lowest NIL collectives in P4 football. The good players you had all just hit the portal.

We just need the right guy who's willing to come into that situation  and we can all set our schedules to watch the CFB rankings shows next year to see where we are in the playoff rankings. I'm sure guys like  Saban and UM are calling their agents today about this pass can't pass up opportunity. We're guaranteed to be at 9/10 wins.

You guys win....

I rarely find that the simplest answer is the correct one. Just giving someone else a try isn't gonna solve this.

Except you keep spouting a simple solution, throw money (that we don't have) at it.

Honestly I want you to replace Hunter. You know how to run a business which is what an AD has to do in this day and age. And you get this program.

We have to get better talent. We have good coaches calling plays. I've heard 1 person say Petrino is washed yet we had a top 10 offense. We have players running open our QB doesn't see. The plays are there. Spend the money to get Dillon Gabriel instead of Taylen Green. You don't think that would've made an immediate difference?

I said to throw money at NIL to get Petrino/Williams better talent and we should see better results. You're not giving Pittman any money. He's not the one calling plays.

To me, that has a more likely impact to us winning games than just hiring a new staff.

Can someone tell me why FSU was in the playoffs last year and is 2-10 this year?

Same staff. Same coaching. Completely different results.

Good coaches can have bad years.

Bad coaches can have good years.

Good coaches don't consistently have mediocre to bad years.

Norvell is an average coach.  Probably in Pittman's tier.  Both better than Morris.

Pittman sets the culture.  Or is supposed to set it.

You aren't wrong that we need more money.  But you aren't realistic in thinking people are going to give more to the current staff given the displeasure with how things are going.  There's also the fact that we aren't coming close to maximizing the resources we already have.

Sam's primary job should be selling the program...more to the point, selling his vision of the future of the program and how he plans to get there.  If he has a good plan, people would likely contribute.

We are a mediocre program. You're gonna have constant mediocre years by doing things the same way.

Many on here would've cut off their left testicle to hire Norvell over Pittman. The board sentiment was that we missed out on Norvell. We KNEW he was the answer. Same one's saying our next coach is gonna get us to 10 wins yet the one coach thet did is holding a play card on the sideline.

Maybe CU is a better example. Sucked last year with the only P4 Oline that was worse than ours. Invested in NIL heavily. Improved thier Oline and win 10 games this year. Same coaches calling the same plays. Is someone gonna tell me that Neon Deion is a meticulous coach that watches film 24/7 and teaches ball security like no other? GTFOH

We had people on here saying they would burn Hog apparel if we hired Deion. What's that sentiment mow? BTW, ain't no way Deion would leave to take our job. Think about that. Deion Sanders at CU is in a better place than our program.

I don't see how it isn't evident. Yes, we can hire a better coach than SP but you are gonna have to do far more than than to win big here. We have the play callers right now that can win here in spite of SP if they had better talent to work with.

I bet Deion would take our job in a heartbeat.  He'd want to see if he could replicate his success in the SEC.

Like I said above, when most of us say "coaching" we are talking about the whole package...strategy, film study, etc are just part of it.  Recruiting (HS and portal) are part of it as well.  Sam isn't good at any of it best I can tell.  The only part he mostly gets right is hiring good staff and getting out of their way.  That hasn't been enough.  Throwing more money at it isn't going to magically fix anything.

What you seem to be missing is that you can't have one (the extra money to bring in the talent) without the other (hiring the better coach).
