I call bullshit on that one.  I didn't hear a word among my friends complaining about Musselman's "social presence" and I am beyond blue to white haired.

Quote from: jdcatty on Sep 18, 2024, 09:42 AMAnd there is no real reason to believe that we have a large cash reserve, that I know of. But that is beside the point.  Hiring coaches for any school is a very iffy proposition.  Charlie Strong looked like a great hire at Texas at the time he was hired.  (by the way, Texas could have easily given up on Sark, but look where they are now).  Napier and Norvell both looked like home runs.  Gus looked like a sure winner at Auburn. (Not the first time that has happened at Auburn).

Awfully easy to say "fire the coach";  not so easy to find someone who will do better.  And it's easy to say "we could've had Kiffin" but there is no guarantee he would have fit in well at Arkansas.

Firing the coach isn't always the answer.  There is never a guarantee that the new guy will be better.  But there are pretty close to zero examples of a guy "figuring it out" after five mostly underwhelming years.

As soon as you know your coach isn't getting the job done, you should make a change.

How many years did Kiffin have as a head coach at Tennessee and USC before getting left on the tarmac?

Are you saying his time at UT and USC is proof he wasn't a good coach?

He apparently wasn't at the time.  He got left on the tarmac. Only time in history I have ever heard that.

D.J. addressing the "snubbing' of Adams and Wright after the UAB game is interesting but the good stuff starts at around 25 minutes in when the three start discussing how BMFP made the Hogs into a Top 5 team.

After listening to how these guys still feel about the Razorbacks and Arkansas after all these years I can't help but feel the current staff is wasting some really valuable opportunities to expose this team to former players who know how to build a winning culture.

Quote from: jdcatty on Sep 18, 2024, 08:30 AMMaybe we will hire that fancy expensive coach y'all want if we have more money?  That's not illogical.

I thought the topic was HY wanting fans to pony up more NIL money for better players?

Unfortunately for him, he doesn't seem to understand fans don't have confidence that Sam's the guy to get us over the hump even with better talent. So it's going to take lots more wins, or a change at the top to restore that confidence.

Just watched this.

These guys love Arkansas and the Razorbacks. Absolutely great story from DJ about a drill Petrino would run that sounds like something out of Army Ranger school. My God, what a program we had back in the day.

I should have clarified with "at the same job."

Around the 32 minute mark when they're celebrating the plays they made so that their teammate could get the TD... and then they talk about the workouts they had to do to make all that possible.

Huge contrast to players during the Bert era checking themselves out of conditioning drills when they were tired. I don't think our head coach wants anything to do with that culture that BMFP built here - losers are scared of winners. DJ, Joe, Jarius, those kinds of guys need to be invited to hang with the team whenever. Spring ball, conditioning, tomorrow's practice, I don't care when they come but they need to be involved in bringing back what worked here.

I guess it's better than being met out on the field by a 5th stringer from the ADs office to let you know you can go ahead and pack your shit.

yeah, at least he didn't have to ask "who are you"?

Frank Beamer is among the few coaches I can think of that was pretty much meh his first 5 or 6 years at an FBS school only to go on a real run for a long time thereafter. No doubt Beamer was a much younger man in those early years where as to compare him to Pittman...well Pittman is on the backside of his career no matter what and wants that rear ech shit in his golden years, but don't want to get out there and trade paint to make it happen.

FWIW I don't think the Frank Beamer types of the world will ever truly get that long to build a program now days. Also the way the sport has changed and likely will continue to evolve over the next decade it's gonna be hard to get out and stay out in front of this unless you were already there to begin with.

Comparatively speaking in year 5 Pittman has two bowl wins and one of those is a Outback NY6 bowl I believe. We shit on Pittman but that isn't terrible. Especially coming off some abysmal seasons. His first year probably would have been a bowl season in a normal schedule year where we face 3 cupcakes.

The question then becomes...Can Pittman win with his own players? So far the survey says NO...he can't. He hasn't. He probably never will.

This just about has to be a make or break year for him and the bar is fairly low. I think a return to A bowl for 2024/25 will buy him 25/26 season. But so far it's sounding like the brass up there are doing the "two-year" pass type shit.

Considering that Ole Miss and Missouri are both programs that are historically inferior to Arkansas and both have coaches we could have hired who are now making between $9 and $11 million a year, I think the "...you guys just want expensive coaches" is just more old school cheap ass bullshit.

We passed on Kiffin because HY got butthurt when after Ole Miss got in on him late, he wanted another $500k.  We passed on the Mizzou coach because apparently Sam acted more excited about the job and was cheaper.

We're cheap, our leadership is poor, and no one is excited about this bullshit anymore.  If you want to sell more product, make a better product.  Don't ask people to pay more so you can afford to make a better product.  It's that simple.

piglosopher

I like Sam, he's probably a good dude to keep in your circle.

But there's a difference when I look at him vs the other coaches in the SEC not currently at Vanderbilt, S.Car, or Florida.

He's not a killer like you have to be in this league.

vegashog

drinkwitz wanted a huge buyout because of how chad left the program and the time he thought it would take to fix it.

considering bert's shit wasn't settled then, plus the $10+ million we owed morris, another big buyout probably wasn't really an option at the time.

It was more than just another $500K.  Sexton was going to keep raising the price until we backed out.  He didn't convince Ole Miss to fire Matt Luke to let Kiffin go to Arkansas and beat their asses.  Wouldn't look good for his country club buddies in Memphis who are OM alums.

I have plenty of issues with Hunter, but recognizing the Sexton scam with Kiffin for what it was isn't one of them.

Also, I think we would pay whatever necessary to get the right coach.  See basketball.  Just paying more to the wrong guy doesn't help matters at all.  And we would have rightly raised hell at hiring Drunkshitz for over $5MM coming off one good year at an App State program that had been good across multiple head coaches.  We really would have been pissed if he'd come back to ask for an extension after going 5-5, 6-7 and 6-7.

Would have been cheaper than a program in the doldrums with a bad coach and his buyout.

Sorry, that's just loser thinking.  If Kiffin was the guy you wanted, you don't walk off in a snit.  You stay in the bidding war as long as possible. As for Drinkwitz...well, maybe, but he actually had head coaching experience.  Sam had none.

Please tell me, oh Great Karnack, how we will know who the right coach is?  Just because he's expensive, and been hot for a couple of years?
