Career assistants are career assistants for a reason.  Set aside games, every day a coach makes a half a dozen decisions that have the potential to majorly impact the direction of the program.  A coach has to be engaged and he has to be good.  Career assistants, particularly those who aren't coordinators never make those decisions.  To put a guy in charge of an SEC program who hasn't made a single major decision in his entire career?   Athletic management malpractice.

One of the media guys on the tard board said Sam doesn't want to retire because he likes all the perks and the notoriety that come with being coach at Arkansas.  Well, he is about to see the downside to the notoriety if he insists on hanging on past his expiration date.

He could retire in three weeks and he'd keep the fame and fortune forever.  People would think of him as the guy who saved us from the Chad Morris era rather than the guy who let us get lapped by Ole Miss and a host of others.

Stick around and he'll be like Nutt...absolutely detested by half the fan base.

I'm sure he likes the perks like a free boat every year but not the notoriety. They actually don't really like NWA.

What are you doing, skulking around in the bushes eavesdropping when they're sitting on the back deck?

You don't think he likes to go to Oaklawn and act like a big shot and get his ass kissed all day?  Or get backstage VIP passes at concerts and all that?  Yeah, he likes the fame.  But he is about to discover it goes both ways.

What are you guys taking about? This man is on the verge of bowl eligible status and yaw shitting on him.

Ok for real I think he's like one of five SEC coaches hired in the same year and I'll wager he's got the worst record and a program that has plateaued under his watchful eye and he by his own admission has stated a number of times that he needs dude's around him with head coaching experience.

I like Sam but after five seasons I think we've seen his ceiling and it's nine wins with someone else's players.

I am willing to let it ride for a year six with Petrino back just to see if we develop a couple arms in the off season but I'm not optimistic.

This team needs solid depth and we are 1 deep at many positions and those 1s wouldn't start a very many SEC programs. So the problems really come down to game management, talent acquisition and retention and really we have to have more than a couple guys on offense that scare the shit out of the opponents.

He could still have all that stuff if he leaves the right way.  Having to be pushed out will kill it all for him.  Either way, Saturday ought to be his last home game as the head coach.

Listened to Acri while driving and it was mentioned that we avg 6 wins a year (including bowl games) since we joined the SEC. Not saying we shouldn't try to get better but we are who we are.

Look who we've had as coaches for all but four years of that time.

When you hire subpar coaches and keep them around for longer than you should, "poor lil arkiesaw" becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Why should I feel like we will hire a better coach? Is there a realistic coaching candidate out there that would 100% come and make us a yearly 8+ win team?

We are at a significant disadvantage with the small amount of D1 recruits AR puts out. We are not an attractive program UNLESS we kill it in MIL. I don't get the feeling people care enough to invest.

I'm talking mostly historically.  We've had chances to hire better coaches and with the exception of Petrino and maybe Ford we've always hired the wrong one.  Nutt over Tuberville.  Firing Petrino over HR bullshit and hiring JLS.  Hiring Bielema over Gundy or someone else whose scheme fit our talent disadvantages.  Hiring Norvell over Morris (ignore this year...even if he'd sucked ass he's miles better than that asshat).  Pittman over Kiffin, or Willie Fritz, or Curt Cignetti who I'm sure we could've gotten.  Even if we get the hire right on paper we fuck it up. Had we not made that succession of poor hires (and one stupid firing) we wouldn't be in the position where our job appears toxic.

So now, we have to find someone who is an up-and-comer and hope we get lucky.  Preferably someone who has won at a slightly lower level rather than an assistant who's always worked at powerhouse programs that have no recruiting issues.  I believe we would see a boost in NIL donations if boosters felt like the current staff wouldn't just pile it up and light it on fire.

I would think a confident coach would look at our situation and think, "if Pittman's dumb ass can go .500 or better there, surely I could win 8-9 games per year." The standard answer to any objections should be, "Ole Miss is historically a worse program than ours since integration.  If they can win, there is no reason why we can't. Come be our version of Lane Kiffin."

I think Sam is a year younger than me.  Who is touring now that he would want backstage passes to?  I think maybe I would be interested in one a year and I am in driving range to ATL so it's not like I am trapped in Podunk
Splash 11! drop ABE track, too confusing

My optimal candidate would be someone that was a successful position coach or coordinator in the SEC and then went to a group of five school as a head coach and enjoyed success.  I don't have any interest at all in a coach who considers Arkansas his "dream job".  A lot of times a coach that gets their dream job ends up laying down once they get it.  Can't have another ROAD (Retired on Active Duty) coach.

I'd be okay with Lashlee given his age, but only as it might relate to the ability to hire him.  With his Shiloh/Springdale/SFOJ connections he might draw out some major NIL contributions.

If there is someone better who is interested I'm fine with that as well.

I think Lashlee would probably be great.  Not sure we could get him.  Probably need to move soon.

This is the year.  Half the SEC is apt to be looking for coaches next year.  Needs to happen now if it is going to happen.

Barton Fink

Is Lashlee really that good? The ACC is awful.

Agreed.  He'll end up with a bigger job if we wait beyond this year.

I'm curious to see if some of these schools pull the trigger on their giant buyouts for their coaches.  We're all justifiably pissed at Yurachek for Sam's $12MM-$15MM, but other SEC schools who aren't happy with their coaches have a much bigger number.

LSU would owe Kelly just north of $60MM to fire him.

Venables at OU and Stoops from UK would walk home with $44MM.

A lot of people think Sun Belt Billy's $26MM tag is the reason he's coming back next year.

I know excluding Kentucky all of those care a lot more about football than we do, but you still have to wonder if the large buyout combined with the upcoming settlement with the former players aren't going to make them hold on a little longer than they normally would.

The ACC is bad, but he's at a school that should be at a roster disadvantage...at least in year one.

He's beating the teams he's supposed to beat.  Many gave him shit for losing the opener to BYU, but that doesn't look like a bad loss at all right now.

I would think Lashlee could easily be ours. If we pass and he continues success at a major school, it'll be another miss added to a long line of misses.
