I think Sam's ego is pretty tender. Retirement along with a semi official continued affiliation with the school where he would still get occasional use of planes, get called back to games to sit in a suite and glad hand and big time it while pounding kobeers with boosters and all that would be the incentive vs. the ignominy of getting fired and being instantly cut off from all that forever. 

I think it would be a hell of a lot more fun to retire to Hot Springs as the Official Razorback Ambassador at large and master of ceremonies and semi-official school drunk than being a fired coach everyone couldn't wait to get rid of and persona non grata.

A million per year off a $3MM per year buyout might move the needle.  Or not.  It's worth investigating.
