Until 5 years ago Sam was a career assistant coach so he is accustomed to being fired and hired based on wins and losses. What he is not accustomed to is being on the receiving end of all the vitriol and personal insults that his bosses endured when the losses became more frequent than the wins. Learning to grow that hard bark required of all successful head HCs/politicians isn't easy when your first gig comes in your 6th decade.

I believe Coach Pittman is more emotionally invested in this job than your average D1 HC. As a result, (while he well understands the consequences of poor season records) the "he's a fat piece of shit" remarks hurt him more.

Dirk nailed it; someone is trying to shield him but I doubt he is aware.

And yes, I still believe a graceful retirement at season's end is in the best interest of all parties.

Earlier this week, Chris Doering was on Full Ride and he was asked if he thought there would be any changes in SEC coaches. He said no, and then paused, and said there could possibly be a retirement. Surely, we couldn't get that lucky.
