Quote from: red death on Dec 22, 2024, 10:23 PMEven Ken Hatfield sucked.  He won because the entire SWC was on probation for cheating.  And he still lost to bad Texas teams.

Any time we played a good team we got our asses handed to us or lost, check his bowl game record.  Miami in 87, UCLA in the Cotton bowl, OU in Orange Bowl, etc.

We have never been a serious football program in my lifetime.  Save a year or two.

We are what we are.  Therefore, this year tracks.  6-6, and we were pretty competitive in almost all the games.  That's about what our average is the last 40 years lol.

Spot on. Do we all want to be a better program, sure, but we are who we are. A lot has to change for us to consistently win at a higher rate and no one seems to be committed to make that happen.

We don't disagree about that.  The only area that differentiates us is the order of operations in making those changes and their relative importance.

I still don't know what "serious" means with respect to a football program.  It seems to be interchangeable with "good" in most uses. But maybe "serious" just means we have to frown a lot, and not laugh at anything.  Not sure.

Being willing to spend money when needed is a big one.  That applies both to NIL for athletes and coaches' salaries/buyouts.  We get held up a lot by "we can't afford it" while other programs take the "we can't afford not to do it" approach and pass us by.

No.  Spending smartly has to be a factor as well. Don't routinely spend money you don't have, but don't piss away the chance at making dollars just so you can save a nickel or two.  Maybe a better way to say it was, don't be so risk averse that you turn away opportunity to invest in the program and improve its stature out of fear of the unknown.

Making better personnel decisions would help, such as maybe not firing the one coach we've had who was winning at a high level over a relatively minor HR infraction, or not hiring a guy with a losing record at SMU who wouldn't even move his family to Fayetteville.  The amount of money we saved in the worst case of judgments by people "harmed" by BP hiring his piece of ass would have paled in comparison to the reduction in value of our brand by having football fall from top 5 in the league to bottom 2-3.

It's the new "we're not prepared to do what it takes to win in the SEC"

nothing has changed except for now we can legally pay players and still have resistance
"I got fired for using free speech" yea imagine getting killed over it

Not serious is letting Nutt hang around after 5 years too long.

Not serious is hiring Bielema, whose style isn't favorable for Arkansas recruiting and against the likes of Bama, LSU, etc.

Not serious is hiring Chad Morris. No need to elaborate.

Not going to criticize hiring Pittman too much given the situation at the time...but he was always a bridge guy we've tried to make a long term solution out of. Career assistant on the edge of retirement? Not serious.

When we lost to liberty in his 3rd year or so, was sort of the canary for me. Good coaches don't let that happen at that point in their tenure. Nevermind the record, undisciplined play of his teams, in-game coaching decisions, etc. Year after year.

2 years behind the NIL collective, just now thinking about hiring a gm when other programs already have one.

I'm hard pressed to find anything serious about Arkansas football. I've mostly quit giving a damn because they clearly don't.

Since so many here like to compare us to Ole Miss now, do you consider them to be Top 5 in the SEC now? If so, who from this group is out; Bama, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Texas? That list doesn't even have A&M or Florida in it. Is Ole Miss serious about football in the SEC?

You said it much better than I could have.

We also need to address WHY we are two years behind everyone else in NIL.  While our AD was crusading against it, being the nominal head of some supposed coalition of schools who were opposed to it happening, our rivals were implementing and emphasizing their collectives.  We were already behind the schools who have always cheated and just had to legitimize the contributions they were always getting under the table (no I don't think we were ever in the league of Auburn, Ole Miss, aTm, etc in paying players although we weren't squeaky clean).

By spending two years campaigning to stop the rule change we let them extend that lead to what may be an insurmountable difference.  Which gets back to the risk aversion/ not spending money to make money points I made.  We were fighting to keep the ability to run things on the cheap while the teams we compete against were throwing money at the new model.  Now we are at a point where if we want to catch up to those schools we likely have to overpay to do it, which is going to end up costing us more money (and more value destruction) than it would have to play ball from day one.  And that's if it's even possible for us to overcome the head start we gave them.

They have gone from the position we are in now (bottom 3-4) to solidly in the top half with room to grow.  Meanwhile we have done the exact opposite since April 2012.

And I think you realize you're being a little disingenuous comparing top five in a sixteen team league to top five in a twelve team league like we were in 2010-2011.

A couple of questions I have for you and anyone else who seems to be taking the other side of the points piglosopher and I are making:

Do you feel like we are making decisions in the best interest of being successful in football?

Do you think the people in charge (AD and coach) are doing the best they can with the resources given to them?

Let me ask this, which other SEC fanbases would trade their coach for ours?

Wow, when you think about it probably not one single team would.  OU fans are ready to get rid of theirs, but I doubt they would take ours in exchange.

The fact that Houston Nutt's name is being floated around by some of our brain damaged media members should tell you how serious our program is. If that fuck nut ever comes back in any capacity, I will forever until the end of my life actively root against Arkansas in all sports. I can stomach being perennial losers in football, but I am not going to watch this program become the play thing of that egotistical retard.

Watching Coastal Carolina and UTSA right now. The UTSA coach said it best: You can't create a culture any more. You are going to lose your best players every year and have to rebuild a team instead of build. Every year. (Or something like that)

My point was, while OM is heading in the right direction and supposedly doing all of the right things, will they ever get past the others in front of them? In the best Petrino year, we were still the third best team in our division.

Does that mean we shouldn't try, of course not. It is just a VERY big hill to climb.

Danny Nutt should be GM. Built a successful business, not afraid to cheat a little bit, shit talker.

Bwain bweed for GM.

Well, when is the last time we beat Georgia by more than two touchdowns?
