Sure...NFL retreads can certainly work you just have to step over the Adam Gase's of the world.

Sark is mostly a college guy as was Holtz and arguably Petrino too but they had that experience in the NFL. Likewise our former TE coach has loads of NFL experience and I don't know anyone that dreams of Dowell Loggains cruising the sidelines in charge of the Razorbacks. I'd rather take my chances with Lunney Jr or Rhett Lashlee.

In order to really sale this turd we may end up having to take out of A&M's book and keep the head coach and force him to hire some real fucking assistants. This never works but it just might in A&Ms case. Only I don't think there is another Petrino lurking about...maybe a former Oregon coach that's kinda disappeared. Oh he didn't disappear he's just in Chicago coaching Justin Fields which is kinda the same thing. Mark Helfrich is more or less in the same profile as Bobby P.

Oddly enough, it was Jack Crowe who perfectly assessed Arkansas football in the summer of 1993.

Orville has a snippet about it in his book, but basically a writer for the Dem-Gazette ran into Crowe as both were picking their sons up from summer camp somewhere in Arkansas before Danny Ford's first season, and the writer asked Crowe what he thought about how Ford would do. Crowe's response was essentially that Ford would have his work cut out for him, and that Arkansas is never going to out-talent anyone and has always excelled by way of great coaching, scheming, and overachieving players. 

He basically described the Petrino era 15 years before it happened, as well as the blueprint for finding a head coach.

This was the Wilson Matthews formula that was perfected by Frank Broyles. Back when it was hard to get to Fayetteville.   Build a whole state program that gets its pick of all the best high school talent and go get the out of staters you need...Alworth, Montgomery, Ferguson, Calcagni...and pull from Texas. Be in better shape than the opponent; stamina in the 4th quarter is where games are won.  Speed over power.  Speed to the ball and speed to the hole.  Brains over brawn.  Smart players make smart plays and execute more complex tactics.  Team football.  Solid line play.   No mistakes with penalties and turnovers.  If an RB got fumbleitis they spent a week with a Burnett brother. If it continued they didn't get the rock.    Excellence in the kicking game.

That formula will always be the only way Arkansas competes. It still holds now but with adjustments for nil and portal.

Finding the right guy is why AD's get paid a lot too.  But it's easier to give a guy who is younger and with more experience a chance than a guy in his early 60s who has never done it before.

Arkansas' two most successful coaches since Broyles were Holtz and Petrino.  They were both NFL retreads.

Both were failures in the nfl.  Holtz had a single season as hc with the Jets.  Petrino had three seasons as QB/OC in Jacksonville 99-01 and then his disastrous 07 in Atlanta. 

Petrino ain't coming back nor should he.  He's not what this program needs.  He likes drawing plays.  We need a hc that can manage all the recruiting of high school, the portal, and nil. You have to get the players in big league footbal before anything.

that's a problem with seemingly large part of the fan base. someone already mentioned, beating texass gets a coach at arkansas an extension and a raise. how true. looking at the past instead of the future.

We just shat the bed massively against a team whose offensive coordinator was that coach we wrongly fired twelve years ago.  It's going to be a topic whether any of us like it or not. 

If the present was slightly less shitty we might have less incentive to rehash the grievances of the past.

He doesn't care enough to actually do the work required.  I think he'll probably retire, but my original post on him not caring was in response to someone posting that we would have to force him to hire good coordinators.  Sam doesn't care enough to be forced into something.  He is set for life no matter what happens.
