I went back and forth with him multiple times last night asking for a link that proved this, even provided my own link of the two letters between Chancellor Robinson and President Bobbitt requesting and approving the hire.  Got nothing from him but a link of a video of Mike Irwin saying he probably shouldn't be head coach or hire anyone.

As you point out, the fact of the matter is that NOTHING is going to change with another year. 
- He's still going to lose a shitload of players to the portal.
- He's still going to lose the locker room late in the season.
- He's still going to play the wrong players.
- He's not going to get better in close games.
- He's not going to get better at keeping his team focused.
- He's not going to play better in Fayetteville.
- He's not going to be better in press conferences.
- He's not going to work hard and grind tape instead of going to Hot Springs.

They wanna keep him because he's a nice jovial man which is why we keep getting mediocre coaches. Fire his ass...let him go retire in hot springs and booze and eat life up. He has no business coaching anymore and was never a top tire SEC coach

I'm pretty sure everyone has already hit on this but the guy's bread and butter (OL) is literally the worst part of the football team basically every year he's been head coach. I was hopeful they'd be good enough to where the new OL coach was able to develop some talent for the longer haul...but it's looking very iffy right now.

After having watched a lot of college football I've come to the conclusion that a good deal of programs are terrible on the OL. It's not just us. I think defensive fronts just have a huge advantage and perhaps that's coming from a development standpoint. Maybe OL's are still being taught to be fat and useless where as the DTs and DEs are getting leaner and faster. Playing spread ball doesn't develop linemen worth a damn and that problem isn't getting any better.

They fire some 24 year old in charge of the NIL program about 3 times a year it seems like. Until we are serious there I don't think our "talent" is going to improve much. That also acts as a nice little yearly scapegoat as to why we're paying a head coach 6 million a year for piss poor results. And as bad as that sounds that's like 11th in the SEC if not worse in salary right now. Oh and another part of that scapegoat excuse is laziness in not pouring a lot of resources into players you have on the roster but don't really anticipate developing.

Bottom line is don't go shopping at Dollar General expecting fancy high quality because it's not likely to end in anything but meh results. Doesn't mean you have to go outspend everyone but you have to hire with the anticipation that this new hire is going to out perform his contract enough to want to give him a fat raise.

Negotiate what?  Arkansas isn't in a position to negotiate anything.  If I'm Sam I say give me my money or I'll finish out my contract. 

The leverage is giving him money to go to his lake house with no obligations versus firing him, giving him the full buyout but requiring him to get a job to offset it. 

He can take $5MM-8MM free and clear for retirement, or he can get the $4.5MM per year from us for the next three minus whatever he gets as an offensive line coach somewhere far from his beloved lake house. 

We have already stopped buyouts on one coach who refused to get a paying job.  Granted we ended up having to settle with him and pay part of it, but only because some dumb ass lawyer forgot to copy/paste the buyout details from his UA contract to the one with the Razorback Foundation.  Surely to God they didn't make the same mistake with Pittman's new deal.
