Agree with Liberty being the turning point. Those damn twists.  But, not so slow. 6 in a row is rocketing downhill pretty damn fast.

Liberty was most definitely Sam's turning point, and it was his version of Bert losing 56-3 to Auburn where it signaled "hey maybe this guy actually isn't good."

A few weeks later we blew a 24-7 halftime lead to Mizzou, and then the Belk Bowl meltdown was to follow.

Insane how all of us saw something in Norvell but we missed the boat completely anyway. We just knew one day, this is how we find ourselves. It happened in excruciating slow motion.

Every SEC West school except us and Mississippi State has a big name behind them. If we hope to keep up, Arkansas will have to pay.


The sad thing is, the uptick in cost is the gum off of a Walton's shoe. We could have every dollar we would ever need if they gave a damn and gave back what the state and school gave to them. God really does hate us to give us this knowledge.

Jimbo had one foot in the grave. Norvell is young and has proven he knows how to win. They weren't that happy with him early on in Tallahassee so I don't understand all the acting like he loves it down there. Plus, it's Tallahassee.

Norvell would be awesome, but let's be honest - he has a lot better recruiting base where he is in addition to
1) he's winning - the national media will love the return of the Noles.
2) Clemson is going down
2a) he has the best program in Florida by FAR
3) he's winning
4) winning bring money for everyone
5) our window closed when we hired the guy who beat him HEAD TO HEAD. If only he had been at SMU instead of Memphis it would have been a no brainer cause you know 7 wins at SMU!!!! (though never beating a P5 team).

Im not sure what your definition of big money is though because Norvell is staring 8.5 in the face returning a top 10 program on the rise.  So whats the number we throw at him to make him leave?  And for those claiming "we throw that big number at him to let the market know that we're serious..", it doesnt work like that. You offer 10 million to Norvell and you look like a fool when he turns you down. The "market" just spoke, and now youre behind the 8 ball and look like a desperate program.

Exactly. And ask A&M how that's working out. They were paying Sumlin big market money way back when, and it cost them HUGE to get rid of him. Then they paid Jimbo Huge money, with something like a 75 million dollar buyout to boot. They just forced an OC hire on him and they're 5-3 and unranked.

There's a big misconception here that big money equals big wins, when it's clear that's not how it works.

Just because you can doesnt mean you should. If its the right guy, sure, but Herman or Traylor would probably jump all over the opportunity for half that.

We are a desperate (and dumb) program. We've been that and looked like that for years.

I'm not talking buy outs. That's how things have got like they are now in the coaching world. "I don't have to work my ass off they can't do anything to me because they'll have to pay my ass"

I'm saying performance based on a reasonable stepped schedule. Even include a "down year" step in there along the way. The money is yours up front. You do the job, you get the money. You don't we part ways.

Times are different now, portal, NIL and all the other stuff available for a coach and program. It's time contracts change how they're structured too.

We can sign Muss to whatever number it takes right now. Regardless of the football money.

The problem with coaching contracts is that you are limited by what your competition is doing.

The collective of all schools' activities sets the market rate, and in 2023 the market rate is $8mm+ per year for at least 4 years.

That's the average for a new power 4 conference coach and will get you an average coach with average results.

We can day dream all day about the ideal contract and pie in the sky incentives and buyout clauses and those will get you an unproven  high school coach in 2023.

It is what it is. Either we say fuck it and continue as we have for the past 11 years, or we say fuck it and do what we have to do to bring in a top ten coach. There's not much in between.

Definitely someone willing ready and able to take advantage of the portal.  Players are going to go where they're coached and developed.  Clemson is tanking and Dabo's refusal and/or inability to fill positions in the portal is a big reason.

Also we need someone who's not so stupid that they would make Chaggie Morris an analyst.

a coach can only offer what's in the pot. the football program just doesn't have the support it needs when it comes to nil, despite all the big money people in arkansas like to brag about.
